Mount Dennis

In 1797, John Dennis, a United Empire Loyalist shipbuilder from Philadelphia, found a highland of scrub brush and forest at the edge of a lush ravine. Naming the area after himself, he opened a sawmill and wool factory, which straddled what is now the intersection of Jane Street and Weston Road. The area’s development into residential was incremental. A century after settlement, Mount Dennis was still mostly industrial, having become home to a brickyard and a sand and gravel pit. In the 1950s, while it was still a curious mix of residential, light industrial and rural, development pressures saw the region sprout the modest post-Victorian structures that are its hallmark. In fact, the current mix of duplexes, bungalows and (mostly attached) Victorians is representative of the neighbourhood’s various stages of growth over the past 200 years.
