Humber Heights - Westmount
Contains the traditional neighbourhoods of:
Humber Heights, Westmount Park
This inoffensive pocket of western Toronto boasts a pack of characteristics that all add up to middle-of-the-road. The houses are a mix of wartime bungalows and newer “starter” monster homes with showcase pyramid-shaped shrubs along one side of the yard. Westmount Park Road itself is home to mansions as huge as 6,000 square feet. But most of the abodes are simple yellow-brick jobs, or backsplits with house numbers burned into quaint birch plaques and willow trees whose branches reach all the way down to the lawn. Tall condominium developments line the north side of Eglinton. A former farming community, the place was subdivided during the First World War in order to provide housing for the workers at the munitions factories in nearby Weston. A rural feel remains throughout thanks to the wide, curbless streets, sometimes non-existent sidewalks, and split-rail fences that border the properties, with those along the eastern edge of the district backing onto the Humber River. Today, the neighbourhood screams “retirees”—with an abundance of porch furniture, extremely tidy garages and meticulous landscaping being the best clues.
