Edenbridge - Humber Valley

Contains the traditional neighbourhoods of:
Edenbridge, Humber Valley, Chestnut Hills

In a highly agreeable section of Etobicoke, Edenbridge–Humber Valley straddles the Kingsway at a place where it feels least like a two-lane highway and most like a gentle suburban street—where trees get taller, streets get narrower and lots get bigger. Once considered a fairly distant suburb, the area is now not only politically part of Toronto, but it’s also psychologically closer to downtown, because of the vast sprawl to the west. The homes, most of which were built before 1960, are generously proportioned, excellently maintained and traditional in design. In Chestnut Hills, which sits in the district’s southwest corner, the 50-something neighbourhood’s cozy, steep-roofed, one-and-a-half-storey Cape Cod–style homes are a refreshing departure from downtown’s red-brick Victorian obsession. With many sitting on enormous 60-by-130-foot lots, the relatively modest homes afford house hunters an excellent opportunity to buy, modify and (sometime in the future) sell for a tidy profit. Edenbridge, in the district’s northern half, appears at first glance to be no more than a generically pleasing middle-class ’50s city development, complete with an array of same-spirited mid-century split-level homes. However, meandering along Edenbridge Drive takes you to a quiet, forested enclave on North Drive, where opulence reigns among a collection of stately country manors perched on the edge of a sheltered ravine. Traffic on Islington and Dundas is heavy, but the neighbourhood’s streetscapes (set back from the main thoroughfares and obscured by trees) ensure the major arteries are not a nuisance.
