Caledonia, Fairbanks
The solid early-20th-century bungalows in this hilly ’hood make good starter homes for those who don’t mind the small square footage and want a backyard. You can still get one such house for less than $300,000, with the goal of building something bigger later in life—many of the lots have been divided and now hold two or even three two-storey semi-detached homes, which sell for just under $400,000. Shopping can be a problem: the original Italian immigrants have moved off the Eglinton strip, and while South Americans, Sri Lankans and Africans are trying to make a go of it, much of the business now goes to the big-box mall to the north. Prospect Cemetery runs parallel to Dufferin, adding a spooky but leafy green touch.
