Lucian Matis consistently puts out one of the most interesting collections of fashion week, but despite being a finalist on the first season of Project Runway Canada, his show on Thursday was quiet. There were a few notable guests—model Stacey McKenzie, who was a regular sight at the Allstream Centre, Ainsley Kerr and Monika Schnarre—but the crowd was nothing compared to the Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style shows the night before. The clothes were maximalist, with ballooning shoulders and hips, intricate beading, busy patterns and lace. The collection was a feast for the eyes; too bad more eyes weren’t there to see it.

May i ask WHY Ainsley Kerr is always mentioned in Toronto Life?? WHO is she? She is a wanna be tv host/actress. Someone hired the girl a publicist for this very reason. It’s pretty pathetic to me that the only ‘notable’ people you can mention are NOT Canadian celebrities.
April 5, 2010 at 12:42 pm | by Samantha GarrowPossibly the small crowd was due to the early time slot. I think part of Matis’s “prize” for the FDCC award last year was a free show this season; perhaps that counted against him as he would not have had any bargaining power when it came to scheduling. Hopefully, next season he goes rogue like many other designers since it’s hard to see how a poorly attended show will help him. Even better if he just left Toronto (better for him, not for TO).

April 6, 2010 at 12:52 pm | by Karen McFarlanesee the outstanding product Lucian Matis brings to the runway is duly recognized.
The collaboration on jewellery designs for the last 2 seasons with Matis and his associate director Arline Malakian, Arline Malakian Photography, has been a very rewarding experience!
It is an honor to work with such very talented and genuine individuals.

Actually, my point was that he wasn’t duly recognized. He got relatively poor media coverage for this collection. Who represents him anyway? I hope he’s seriously looking at that because this was a fail as an event.
April 9, 2010 at 11:48 pm | by ZenThe problem is not Lucian or who is representing him, but the FDCC. They only give the designers 175 seats, and the rest are reserved for their media and sponsors + some are sold to the public. I attended the show and there were only two back rows that were not filled, so I don’t quite understand why this big hoopla.
April 15, 2010 at 9:03 am | by CarolynAnother issue was the timing (5pm on a Thursday before Good Friday). As a good Catholic I had to leave the venue right after Lucian’s show. I had a lot of friends that were supposed to attend but were all stuck in traffic.
I really dont think that the FDCC is doing a great job. This season’s Fashion Week was truly WEAK and as for the timing: well it couldn’t have chosen a worse week.
Bravo Lucian! Job well done!
FDCC think twice before putting on another Fashion Week!
