ADDRESS: 1 Columbus Avenue, Unit 302
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Roncesvalles
AGENT: Robin Pope, Brad J. Lamb Realty Inc.
PRICE: $1,295,000
THE PLACE: Roncesvalles may be overrun with arty cafes and doggie daycares now, but back in the day it was home to all kinds of industrial endeavors. Built in 1902, this five-storey building was once a factory that churned out baseball gloves and was converted into ten condo lofts 15 years ago by Jackson Goad Architects.
BRAGGING RIGHTS: While developers are putting up loft-style condos across the city, this one’s the real deal. The original brick and beams are exposed and intact, and it has a private elevator that takes you straight into the living area.
BIG SELLING POINT: Space. The master bedroom is roughly 18-feet by 14-feet and the second bedroom isn’t much smaller. The den can even be repurposed as a third bedroom.
POSSIBLE DEAL BREAKER: Sadly, sliding across the hardwood floors in your socks doesn’t actually count as exercise—if you want an on-site gym, pool, or tennis court, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
BY THE NUMBERS:
• $1,295,000
• 2,300 square feet
• $736.47 in monthly maintenance fees
• 10-foot ceilings
• 3 parking spaces
• 2 bedrooms
• 2 bathrooms
• 1 balcony
• 1 private elevator
- A private garage holds one of the parking spaces
- Not all units contain a private elevator—but this one does
- A corner of the living space, showing off the exposed brick
- A chest of drawers, apparently Parisian
- The dining room leads out to a balcony with a view of your neighbours’ less cool homes
- The sizable windows let plenty of light into the living room
- Another angle on the living room
- Living room angle, the third
- Living room, angle 4.0
- Fully sealed, the air in this loft could sustain a family of three for weeks
- The kitchen, complete with fridge, oven, gas cooktop, microwave and dishwasher
- Each cabinet sports back-painted glass
- An AEG gas cooktop
- Caesar stone counters, perhaps retrieved from his campaign in Gaul
- A leather couch and abstract art (ideal for budding psychiatrists)
- The mastern bedroom, with a giant M in case you get lost
- A northwest view keeps the morning sun out of your eyes
- The master bathroom, with marble mosaic floors
- The second bathroom has subway-style tiles, which summon images of cleanliness for all Torontonians.

It’s pretty nice. But it’s spensive!

November 6, 2011 at 11:08 am | by SallyOne Columbus has been one of the stops on my 10LoftsInADay tours for years. Its certainly not a starter loft but priced in the $500s/sqft does make it a better value than some cookie cutter spaces priced over $700/sqft. Not only are they not making any more land….they are just not converting old factories into memorable lofts like this one.
