House of the week: $3.3 million for a mansion with a man cave

ADDRESS: 44 Old Yonge Street

NEIGHBOURHOOD: Bridle Path-Sunnybrook-York Mills

AGENT: Paula Von Stedingk, Chestnut Park Real Estate Limited, Brokerage

THE PLACE: Nestled in the ravines and gardens of Hogg’s Hollow, this 1926 property handsomely mixes old-world appeal with modern comforts. It features original glass cabinets in the dining room, five wood-burning fireplaces and a grand staircase, while the modern kitchen, integrated sound system and in-floor heating offer contemporary touches.

BRAGGING RIGHTS: The truly enormous walk-in closet is perfect for anyone with a Carrie Bradshaw streak or the patience to wait for yesteryear’s fashion to come back in style.

BIG SELLING POINT: The multi-room man cave on the lower level. The hunter-green games room—complete with pool table, beanbag chairs and fireplace—is flanked by a 2,000-bottle wine cellar and an exercise room (with steam bath).

POSSIBLE DEAL BREAKER: The panoply of jewel tones—cobalt, ruby, amethyst, aquamarine—may not be to every buyer’s taste.

BY THE NUMBERS:
• 2,000-bottle wine cellar
• 85 years old
• 6 bathrooms

  1. Hideous, this is what 3.3 million gets you? Ha.

  3. John doesn’t know what he’s talking about – this home (while a little bit outdated) is beautiful, especially in person. One of my friends lives on that road and I’ve walked by it many times. Too much traffic noise however.

  5. Ick. Clearly, you can’t buy taste. Boring and predictable.

  6. Nice place–just loose the ugly furniture and wallpaper. Oh and all the gold fireplace accessories.

  8. 3.3 million and baseboard heating? Road noise? No pool? Huh?

  9. wonder what the house cost back in 1926? The price is steep now but I guess that’s Toronto for you.

  10. Clearly the house has the all important location, good bones and great curb appeal, however the decor and trim are dated to say the least. This house needs to be redecorated and renovated top to bottom and given the size you’re looking at a good 750K (easy) to do it justice…..no way in hell I’d pay 3.3 million and then have to pour another three quarter mil in just to get it updated.

  11. 4 remotes in the gym! Maybe when they have 3.3 greenbacks in their wallets they can invest in an all-in-one!

  12. Amazing . TL seems to be getting better with getting homes that are truly worthy of looking at. This home speaks volume and ‘old money’ and perfectly decorated for its location and stick to its traditional decor along Old Yonge. For all the critics – the bad ones- of this house, go cuddle up in your 400sq ft downtown overprice condo and get real.

  13. Umm Pee, You can stay up there on Old Yonge as apparently the prominence is on Old for someone with your taste. Given your comments theres a reason we choose to live in 400sq ft condos downtown that even ‘old money’ can’t buy. Far as the house goes, prices in Toronto aren’t worth it.

  14. Traffic noise is a deal breaker. There is a pool but the above poster was correct about the re-decorating that would be needed. If the docor spoke 1926, it might be just fine. Sadly, it is very tacky. This home reeks of new money, not old as someone else suggested. Declasse.
