Despite the one per cent connotation of its name (say it out loud), L-Eat Express offers fresh lunch selections priced for the other 99. And while it’s certainly fast, there’s plenty of space to sit down and take your time in the charming dining room. Owner Tony Loschiavo (also of Paese, whose second location is a few blocks away) began L-Eat Catering in North York over 20 years ago, first as a private and corporate event caterer (chances are you’ve enjoyed his fare before). Executive chef Christopher Palik concocts daily hot lunch specials, like turkey shepherd’s pie, buttermilk fried chicken and lamb curry madras, which are tweeted out each morning. But be warned: they’re usually gone by 1 p.m. If you’re too late, go for the roasted turkey sandwich ($7.50) on a fresh, crisp calabrese roll, with lots of arugula and creamy, tart Pommery aïoli that’s dotted with crunchy mustard seeds. It pairs nicely with a winter salad of sweet red and golden beets ($2/100g), loaded with pine nuts. Being so over our New Year’s resolution already, we finished off our trip with a sweet and salty pecan and bacon turtle ($1.70).
The cost: $15.71, including tax.
The time: 10 minutes, most of which were spent trying to decide.
