Weekly Lunch Pick: the fajita bar at Carnicero’s, St. Lawrence Market’s newest butcher shop

Late last year, Witteveen Meats manager Brad Noonan took over the Manos Meats stand down the hall at St. Lawrence Market, and, after giving the place a revamp, renamed it Carnicero’s (Spanish for butcher). The new space features 60 feet of gleaming display space and a custom-made fajita bar, perfect for post-holiday culinary budgets and diets (and for grabbing something for dinner while you’re grabbing something for lunch). Among the selections are pulled pork and Texas red chili burritos, but it’s usually more fun to build your own. The chicken fajita ($6) comes with tender, slow-roasted chicken and peppers on a tortilla with the works: sour cream, cheese, hot sauce, salsa (for even more heat) and chimichurri (for tang), to which we add a little coleslaw too (for crunch). All of it is made in-store. The rich mix of sour, salty and spicy flavours had our mouth tingling long after lunch was over. And fine, we’ll admit it—we went back the next day for the equally delicious pulled pork burrito ($6).

The cost: $8, including tax and a bottle of water.

The time: A lean three minutes.

Carnicero’s, 93 Front St. E at St. Lawrence Market (main level), 647-478-9609, carniceros.ca.

  1. oh, that sounds awesome.

Careful when shopping for steaks from these guys though, the price be each instead of by weight and you will pay almost double what it should cost. Good quality but terrible pricing scheme.

  2. I have to disagree with tates comment. I found the steaks pricey compared to some of the vendors at the market, but reasonable for the quality that is being offered. Looking forward to trying the pulled pork burrito!
