Soon Dubu (Image: Matthew Fox)
With this year’s harsh winter feeling like a punishment for last year’s mild one, we get out of the cold and into a cozy bowl of soon dubu at Swish by Han, the year-and-a-half-old Korean restaurant near St. Lawrence Market. Soon dubu is a hot and spicy jjigae—a traditional Korean stew—loaded with thick, silky slices of tofu, onions, carrots and a quail egg, and served with a side of sticky rice. Given a choice of seafood, beef or mushroom to toss in, we opt for the thinly sliced rib-eye, which adds ballast to the buttery tofu. It arrives in a candle-lit cast iron pot that keeps the broth hot until the last bite. Take that, winter!
The cost: $16, with tax and tip.
The time: 50 minutes, just long enough to warm up.

What does “the time” refer to? 50 minutes of what?

Try the one next to the (now closed) Morning Glory, north side of Bloor. ‘Hope MG’s sign is still there! This one is a mom-and-pop place where they also sell sushi.

I don’t think its a good idea to get a korean dish, soon dubu jigae, at a restaurant that does sushi as well
