Three GTA hot spots make it onto En Route’s list of the best new restaurants in Canada

En Route’s annual best new restaurants list is out, and it contains good news for the culinary scene in and around Toronto. A few deserving but predictable downtown spots have made the cut: Buca, King West’s rustic Italian joint, is at number nine; Local Kitchen, Parkdale’s rustic Italian joint, sits at number four. As for quasi-Toronto mentions, Singhampton’s Haisai takes the top spot—just as it did for us—while the Scaramouche vets at Dundas’s Quatrefoil came in seventh.

Outside of Ontario, nods went to Vancouver’s Chinese brasserie Bao Bei (#2) and Montreal’s Cava (#3).

With four out of 10 of En Route’s recommendations either downtown or within driving distance of the GTA, it’s looking like Toronto hasn’t been usurped as the culinary capital of Canada just yet.

  1. Your headline is wrong. It should read ‘Two GTA hot spots…” since, of course, Singhampton and Dundas, Ontario are not even close to being part of the GTA.

Also, you might want to check your logic. If you’re counting two restos outside the GTA as evidence that “Toronto hasn’t been ursurped as the culinary capital of Canada,” shouldn’t Vancouver get to claim the Van resto on the list, as well as the ones in Sooke and Cowichan Valley? And wouldn’t Montreal, with two restos listed and half the population of Toronto, actually have more of a case to claim ‘culinary capital of Canada’? Just sayin…
