Thanksgiving is hectic enough, what with the turkey and that one uncle no one remembers inviting, so the seventh annual Pie in the Sky event is here to take care of dessert and provide an icebreaker for relatives who have nothing to say to each other. Twenty-two kitchens from across the city—bakeries, catering companies, restaurants—are baking a total of 850 pies and selling them on-line to benefit the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation’s food program.
Each apple or pumpkin pie is baked according to the chef’s own recipe and ready for pickup on October 9 (the last day to buy a pie is October 6, but there are still about 600 pies left). Unfortunately, customers have no say in which kitchen their pie will come from. La Rocca is donating the most pies (60); Daniel et Daniel will make 25 apple tarts. Other participants include Dufflet, Canoe, Senses and All the Best Fine Foods.
Though pricey at $35 each, every pie sold will provide a meal for 10 people living with HIV/AIDS. Those who don’t want a surprise pie (hey, raisins aren’t for everyone) or are reserving their caloric intake for stuffing can still make a donation on the Web site.
