The scoop on the Drake Hotel’s new ice cream shop

Heavenly hot days—like today, in fact—are great days to be a Torontonian, if only because we have some of the best ice cream around. Next month, the Drake Hotel is throwing its cone into the ring with a new ice cream and T-shirt store, appropriately named Drake Scoops and Tees, located a few doors east of its General Store at 1140 Queen Street West. Why? Because, as promoter Lisa Powers tells us, it’s “something fun for the neighbourhood.”

Fun, indeed. According to Powers, the flavours will include such curious combinations as lemon–olive oil, fig-port and cinnamon-lychee. Chef David Chow’s ice cream bars will be sold alongside other frozen dairy sourced from Metropolitan Ice Cream.

While the combo of T-shirts and dessert seems odd at first, we get it. After all, ice cream tends to melt, and really, nothing gets fig and port out of cotton. The real question is, why don’t more restaurants provide on-site shirt replacement?

  1. It’s funny because my friend & I joked like 3 summer back about opening an ice cream shop up in Wasaga Beach that sold t-shirts.

Funny enough that same Summer we made up an idea to rent out beach chairs, that Summer a larger company did that exact thing.

My next idea must happen before someone steals it lol

  2. Cow’s in Nova Scotia beat you to the concept of selling scoops & tees. It’s my favourite shop at the waterfront in Halifax……and I don’t even like ice-scream all that much.
Goes to show: the Cow’s shirts are really great indeed!
Can’t wait to try out one of these ice-creams of yours, though.
    I’ll have the fig-port, please!
