The cuisine is supremely so-so, but the glitzy atmosphere and A-plus people-watching at La Société—the crown jewel of Toronto’s see-and-be-seen scene—more than make up for it. Here, the inside scoop on who sits where.

Arthur Mendonça, fresh from a triumphant return to fashion week last season, showed another collection sure to wow buyers and critics alike (it wowed us, at the very least). Mendonça’s move back to Toronto Fashion Week (last year he showed during Rogue Fashion Week) was a superbly well-attended affair: even those lucky enough to nab a seat (it was standing-room only for latecomers) were squished together like sardines, presumably thanks to the FDCC’s overzealous ticket selling. Although we remember the fashions fondly, our most vivid memory is being smashed in a line the entire evening alongside models Yasmin Warsame and Stacey McKenzie (never one to steal focus, she vamped on the runway in an IZMA fur ballgown), hairstylist Jie Matar, rising starlet Sarah Gadon, Fashion Television dude Glen Baxter, Dragon’s Den star Arlene Dickinson and songstress Keshia Chante, who all showed up to support Mendonça and sat with feet firmly planted in the front row. Check out Mendonça’s full show after the jump.

The anticipation was high for Jay Manuel’s debut as a designer for Sears. We’ve never seen an Attitude by Sears show so well attended, but we understand it was due to widespread rumblings of cameos from Tyra Banks and Gwen Stefani. Neither rumour turned out to be true, and the buildup to a Sears show turned out to be exactly that: a Sears show. See a full cast of Canada’s and America’s Next Top Model contestants and Yasmin Warsame in our runway coverage below.

In today’s Africa-themed Globe and Mail, guest editors Bono (yes, that Bono) and Bob Geldof ran a profile of Somali-born, Toronto-based model Yasmin Warsame, who was photographed by Bryan Adams (yes, that Bryan Adams). Among articles about mining and Africa’s new economy, the woman Michael Kors once crowned “the next Iman” talks about being raised in Mogadishu as the youngest of 21 children. She talks about being lured to Toronto (from London, at the age of 15) by its cultural diversity; she remains here despite her international success because her son’s father lives here. The piece also has the requisite serving of humble pie: “I’m a multicultural woman,” says Warsame. “I can go home and eat with my hands, and I can come back and do my modelling. It’s wonderful.” Eating with your hands might be taboo in some haute couture circles, but not Toronto. Just ask the starving models backstage at fashion week.
