TIFF PARTY: Ray Liotta and Stephen Dorff eventually turn up for The Iceman after-party

Gerard Butler (Image: Lu Chau/Photagonist)

Although a number of The Iceman’s A-list stars, including Winona Ryder, David Schwimmer and James Franco, were no-shows at the after-party at the Virgin Mobile Arts and Cinema Centre at Charles Khabouth’s Storys, fans still worked themselves into a tizzy over the members of the star-studded cast that did show—including Stephen Dorff, Chris Evans and Ray Liotta (plus Gerard Butler, who isn’t in the film but attended to wish them his best).

TIFF PARTY: Naomi Watts is a dancing queen at the CAA bash

TIFF PARTY: Naomi Watts is a dancing queen at the CAA bash

Watching Naomi Watts shake her groove thang to the sultry sounds of George Michael at the CAA party at Cinema in Liberty Village on Sunday night is one of our top TIFF moments this year. The stunning star was in high heels and a formal gown, but that didn’t stop her from owning the dance floor—she even shimmied to Naughty by Nature on her way out.

TIFF PARTY: Zac Efron, Dennis Quaid and Maika Monroe at the At Any Price post-premiere party

Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron (Image: Lu Chau/Photagonist)

After a weekend of non-stop partying, it takes something pretty incredible to keep us out after midnight on a Sunday. And around 12:30 a.m. at the Virgin Mobile Arts & Cinema Centre at AMC Storys, as we were abusing the free photo booth (hey, we want to make sure we look good, too) and eating too many sliders, we got just what we needed to keep our spirits going: Zac Efron’s smize. True, after the star arrived, he stuck to the well-guarded VIP area at the At Any Price post-premiere party (along with co-stars Dennis Quaid and Maika Monroe). But Nicole Kidman’s pee buddy wasn’t entirely off limits. As admirers nervously approached the velvet rope, asking for photos, he casually said, “Yeah, sure” and either came over for a shot or let them come to him. Swoon! A man (almost) of the people. And while one guest was overheard whining, “He’s not as tall in person as I thought he’d be,” we felt like reminding her that it’s not the size that counts, it’s the number of abs.

TIFF PARTY: The cult of Weinstein on Day Four at Soho House

TIFF PARTY: Soho House

When you’re this big, they call you Weinstein (and no, that’s not a fat joke). Harvey Weinstein, former head of Miramax and likely the most powerful man at TIFF, held court (once again) on Sunday night at the celebrity hotspot for this year’s festival. Having spied on him for three days now, we can report what might be our favourite TIFF ritual: the deferential Weinstein greeting. Read on for the scoop in our fourth series of dispatches from Soho House.

TIFF PARTY: The annual George Christy luncheon attracted an impeccably turned-out crowd of stars and power brokers

TIFF PARTY: George Christy

It must be a precondition of being wealthy, famous or otherwise fabulous to look perfectly fresh the morning after a night on the town. Or perhaps the guests at the annual George Christy TIFF cocktail party and luncheon all spent sun up in a vat of Olay, because at noon sharp on Saturday, the A-list was immaculately turned out as they filed into the ballroom of the still unopened Four Seasons Hotel (the official unveil is October 5). Christy himself, who has hosted this event for the last 28 years, greeted guests at the door, looking modern in a suit jacket paired with sneakers. Hilary and Galen Weston (who looked elegant enough to be eating with the Queen, or at least Kate Middleton) mingled with Ben Mulroney, while Ewan McGregor sipped lemonade, posed for phone photos and chatted with Shinan Govani (who, in turn, chatted with just about everyone). Salman Rushdie, Deepa Mehta, Paul Haggis, Atom Egoyan, Suzanne Boyd and FASHION’s Bernadette Morra were also in attendance. But perhaps the event’s most charming guest was Conrad Black, who, despite his recent prison release and ongoing battle to retain his Order of Canada, worked the room with a keen, bright glint in his eye (as opposed to the broken, escaped-from-Oz look one might expect). Indeed, he almost had us convinced he could actually make a comeback to his former soaring status as a newspaper baron.

TIFF PARTY: The annual Hello! Canada bash drew, appropriately, a swarm of Canadian celebs

TIFF PARTY: Hello! Magazine

Hello! magazine hosted its fourth annual TIFF party at the Ritz Carlton last night, drawing a crowd of mostly Canadian celebs. Our favourite guest, though, was Ed Burns, the prolific American writer/director/actor here to promote his new film, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, who told us he had spent the afternoon walking around the city, patronizing Buca and Irish pubs like P.J. O’Brien’s. Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared strutted in with a posse that included homeboys Greta Constantine. The red carpet was heavy with local talent like musicians Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida and Fefe Dobson, who wore a stunning Rachel Roy sequined jumpsuit, as well as the adorable and very stylish couple Sarah Slean and Royal Wood. Also present: a contingent of athletes like Joffrey Lupul (who made a point of sharing his celebrity crush on Johnny Depp) and the extraordinarily tall (seriously!) Canadian tennis phenom Milos Raonic.

TIFF PARTY: Greg Kinnear leads a stampede of actors to the buffet at the Writers after-party

Lily Collins and Greg Kinnear (Image: Zee Ali/Photagonist)

Premiere parties almost never start on time. And even when they do, the stars usually come late. Except maybe when there’s food involved and the cast is hungry. Which is what we suspect happened last night when, at 8:30 sharp, Greg Kinnear pushed past us in the security line for the Writers celebration dinner at the Virgin Arts and Cinema Centre at the AMC Storys building.

TIFF PARTY: Ms. Lauryn Hill set the room on fire at the big annual One X One party

TIFF PARTY: Ms. Lauryn Hill set the room on fire at the big annual One X One party

While most A-listers chose to spend their Saturday night downtown, anyone looking to have some real fun was at the Kool Haus for the annual One X One fundraiser. One X One is one of those parties that gets a lot of hype, because it’s such a festival staple, it’s for an indisputably good cause—the charity aims to improve the quality of life for children all over the world—and it’s always a good time. Toronto rapper Kardinal Offishall kicked the night off, getting the crowd sufficiently pumped with special guests like Solitair, Jully Black and K’naan (who moved Kardinal almost to tears with his song). And then Ms. Lauryn Hill came on. And Ms. Lauryn Hill was awesome.

TIFF PARTY: Jude Law and Alexander Skarsgård get hearts thumping at the Artists for Peace and Justice luncheon

TIFF PARTY: Jude Law and Alexander Skarsgård get hearts thumping at the Artists for Peace and Justice luncheon

There’s likely no better way to spend a late-summer Saturday afternoon than at a garden party at a lush Rosedale estate. Particularly when the entertainers include Chantal Kreviazuk and Arcade Fire and the guest list bears names like Alexander Skarsgård, Milos Raonic and Ian Somerhalder (who we’re pretty sure is Rob Lowe’s long-lost brother). Did we mention the open bar? Such was the glory of this weekend’s Artists for Peace and Justice party, co-hosted by Oscar-winning writer Paul Haggis, producer Trudie Styler (husband Sting sadly not in tow) and a perfectly coiffed Jude Law (who ended up being one of the last to arrive—possibly the result of being out too late the night before at Soho House?).

TIFF PARTY: Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev go back to school at the Perks of Being a Wallflower party

TIFF PARTY: Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev go back to school at the Perks of Being a Wallflower party

Last night we left the TIFF bubble of King West and headed to a converted garage near Trinity-Bellwoods for the after-party for the teen drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Stark white walls lit up with colourful LED lights served as the backdrop for the high school-themed party complete with yearbook photos, a massive Lite-Brite constructed from bottles of Vitamin Water (they were the sponsor, natch) and drinks served kegger-style in colourful plastic cups. Emma Watson, wearing a delicate Erdem floral-and-lace number, was misty-eyed when she spoke to press on the red carpet about her emotional reaction after seeing the film for the first time. Degrassi alum Nina Dobrev, meanwhile, looked practically angelic in Monique Lhuillier. Castmates Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons and Reece Thompson and director Stephen Chbosky were also in tow.

TIFF PARTY: Alexander Skarsgård loves ’em and leaves ’em at the after-party for What Maisie Knew

Julianne Moore, Alison Mosshart and Alexander Skarsgård (Image: Lu Chau/Photoganist)

Last night, as Alexander Skarsgård arrived at the post-premiere reception for What Maisie Knew—to shrieks from a pack of celeb-stalking young ladies—the crammed room inside AMC Storys underwent a moment of euphoria. The True Blood star effortlessly criss-crossed the space, shaking hands and posing for cell snaps. Necks craned to catch glimpses of his beguiling smile (damn, those teeth are white) and people could be overheard saying, “He’s so handsome!” (okay, fine, that was us). His co-star Julianne Moore, in a sexy Alexander McQueen LBD, was more reserved, sticking to a back corner with a small group of guests. The buzz, however, fuelled by a mix of hamachi-topped mini pizzas and Grolsch, was so loud it was nearly impossible to chat, or to hear the music, deejayed by Alison Mosshart of The Kills (we think we caught snips of Amy Winehouse and Adele, but it’s hard to say). Yet, before we could Google how to say biceps in Swedish, Skarsgård and Moore, soon followed by the crowd, made an exit. We’re still not sure why, since the Munge Lunge–designed room (all raw bricks and hefty beams) had everything a celebrity would need to keep going for hours, if not days: a cellphone charging station, a photo booth (with a small pile of unsightly rejects on a table outside) and a stocked jelly bean dispenser.

TIFF PARTY: Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and other celebs revive a flagging Seven Psychopaths party

Sam Rockwell, Abbie Cornish and Woody Harrelson (Image: Lu Chau/Photoganist)

It’s odd when a party with not one but two VIP areas (a ground-floor zone and another on the second level) suffers a noticeable dearth of VIPs. Such was very nearly the case last night at the Seven Psychopaths premiere party at Patria, Charles Khabouth and Hanif Harji’s yet-to-open King West restaurant. The darkly romantic space was far from full for most of the evening. After Abbie Cornish walked the red carpet in a red Giuiletta gown, the small press clutch packed away their cameras and moved on. There was a second burst of excitement when Woody Harrelson (wearing a grey suit, a TIFF baseball cap pulled low and flip flops) snuck in through a side door with his entourage, but it wasn’t enough to keep guests from trickling out (one young lady was even overhead saying, “This is a lot less fun than I thought it would be”). Those who stuck it out were rewarded though because, before we could declare the event dead, both Christopher Walken and Colin Farrell dropped in, upping the star quotient considerably (Shinan Govani later observed that the party had a five-to-one ratio of celebs to regular people).

TIFF PARTY: Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart hang out in the ultimate tweenage fantasy at Soho House

TIFF PARTY: Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart hang out in the ultimate tweenage fantasy at Soho House

The party gods smiled on Soho House again last night, which is not at all surprising at this point (though we suspect they’ll get some competition for the most star-powered soirée tonight from the CAA party in Liberty Village). Those of us keeping a celebrity score card were able to tick off Kristen Stewart, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Emma Watson, Emily Blunt, Jake Gyllenhaal, America Ferrera, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Alexander Skarsgard, Andy Samburg and Woody Harrelson. The biggest goss of the night, though, was the clandestine Twilight/Hunger Games rendezvous (who knew Bella and Katniss were buds?). Read on for the scoop—in our third set of dispatches from Soho House.

TIFF PARTY: Christina Hendricks and Elle Fanning catch up like schoolgirls at the Ginger and Rosa after-party

Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Alessandro Nivola and Christina Hendricks (Image: Lu Chau/Photoganist)

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars buzzed around the Entertainment District on Friday night, promoting nine star-studded films being screened on day two of the Toronto International Film Festival. On the corner of Duncan and Pearl, a small crowd of mainly curious bar-hoppers loitered by two red carpets set up on each side of Charles Khabouth and Hanif Harji’s newest venue, the AMC Storys—the location of last year’s hyped Soho House pop-up club. Still, it was after midnight before the stars started to show for the Ginger and Rosa post-premiere party.

TIFF PARTY: Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and a pair of hard-partying twins at the Spring Breakers shindig

TIFF PARTY: Spring Breakers

Spring Breakers may not really be about spring break, but the after-party sure was. Stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine feted the film’s Canadian premiere on Friday night with a spring break–themed bash at Brassaii on King West (complete with a hot tub full of bikini babes and beach balls on the patio). After tucking into a meal of steak and corn, Gomez caught up with David Blaine and entertained a crowd of male admirers (Justin Bieber, watch your back). Later, she joined Hudgens, who was by the candy bar clinging to her boyfriend, Austin Butler, and sucking a cherry Blow Pop. Meanwhile, Eli Roth hung out with the film’s director, Harmony Korine, Michael Pitt mingled on the patio sporting a candy necklace and Natasha Lyonne tottered around looking relaxed and much less messy than we’ve seen her.
