TIFF 2011 roundup: (mostly non-fictitious) Dave Matthews edition

Dave Matthews on the Ides of March red carpet with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn (Image: Christopher Drost)

Like a hirsute garden gnome, contemporary alt-blues-roots rocker Dave Matthews popped up everywhere at TIFF this year. First he crashed onto the red carpet for the Ides of March. Then he made an appearance at the mammoth Grey Goose Soho House party for A Dangerous Method. (Turns out, he wasn’t just here for fun—the multi-platinum college balladeer is the co-founder of ATO Pictures, which acquired the North American rights to The Woman in the Fifth back in February.) Indeed, he showed up so often that we started finding him everywhere we looked. Check out our slideshow of Matthews’ appearances, after the jump.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Ethan Hawke—and, yes, Dave Matthews—at The Woman in the Fifth red carpet

The absence of Kristin Scott Thomas from the gala presentation of The Woman in the Fifth made for a pretty thin red carpet at the Winter Garden Theatre yesterday evening. Thankfully, Ethan Hawke showed his handsomely creased faced—and for some reason Dave Matthews got in on the action here too, even posing for a photo with Hawke and director Pawel Pawlikowski. This isn’t the first unexplained TIFF red carpet appearance for Matthews—he’s already flashed his pearly whites at the opening of The Ides of March and a number of exclusive parties. We still don’t know why exactly he’s in town, but he appears to be having a rollicking good time. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

We at The Hype have been hunting down the celebrities (and their publicists), and we’ve got two new confirmed TIFF attendees to unveil: Ethan Hawke, who will be here promoting The Woman in the Fifth, and Glenn Close, who is premiering Albert Nobbs, in which she impersonates a man, and is therefore Oscar baiting.
