Ever since the late aughts, when Pizzeria Libretto, The Black Hoof and Guu opened with strict no-reservations policies, lineups have become a normal part of eating out. In a new restaurant’s buzzy first weeks, waits can last three hours (see Electric Mud BBQ). Whether it’s the dead of winter or the dog days of summer, we loathe lining up.

Perennially busy Guu Izakaya now takes reservations

The izakaya infamous for long line-ups is finally taking reservations. Guu is the latest formerly first-come, first-serve restaurant to start booking tables this year, joining fellow trendy, line-up laden hot spots like Ortolan and Pizzeria Libretto. But the new policy, announced January 2 via Twitter, hasn’t resulted in a full reservation book and people are still huddled outside Guu’s door Wednesdays through Saturdays. Given the unrelenting crowds, we suspect the slow uptake is more a failure of marketing rather than a lack of interest.
