TIFF RED CARPET POLL: Which Toronto celebrity was best dressed at TIFF 2012?

Sure, Hollywood’s stars descend on Toronto during TIFF, but the local talent was also well-represented on the red carpets this year. Sarah Gadon looked the part of a classic starlet on Antiviral’s red carpet in a gold Dolce and Gabbana dress with patent black pumps and scarlet lipstick, while singer Chantal Kreviazuk wore cerulean for the premiere of Show Stopper: The Theatrical Life of the Garth Drabinsky. Toronto darling Rachel McAdams took to Passion’s red carpet in a sleeveless tux-inspired look from Italian designer Emilio Pucci, accented with a gilded scarf (we like the idea, but those pants are a little bulky-looking, no?). Finally, writer and director of Stories We Tell Sarah Polley was characteristically low-key on the red carpet in a short, sheer dress, though her gold floral heels are sweet. Whose look wins out?

Red Carpet Style: 23 looks at TIFF’s leading men and women

Scrutinizing the glamorous gowns and sharp suits worn by film industry elite is one of the principal pleasures of TIFF (after all the movie talk, of course). And now that the festival is winding down—most of the A-listers have already dispersed, taking their impossibly attractive faces and designer wardrobes with them—it’s time to pick out the best of the bunch, as well as a few notable flubs.

TIFF RED CARPET: Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko shine for To The Wonder (director Terrence Malick does not)

TIFF RED CARPET: Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko shine for To The Wonder (director Terrence Malick does not)

Time was, director Terrence Malick’s films came once in a blue moon, each an organic outgrowth of the filmmaker’s elusive personality and neo-transcendentalist philosophy. It’s only been a year since Malick’s insanely ambitious Tree Of Life divided critics, but now he’s back with To the Wonder, which arrives at TIFF like a whisper on the wind. The reclusive, press-shy Malick wasn’t there, of course, though rumours about him circled around TIFF (we heard someone say that To the Wonder’s producer said that, “Terry wakes up every morning and has literally billions of ideas,” which was pretty funny). Instead, To the Wonder‘s stars represented the film at the Princess of Wales theatre yesterday. Some of them, anyway. Ben Affleck (who of course showed up for the Argo premiere) and Javier Bardem were AWOL. Ditto Rachel Weisz, whose role was cut at the last minute (Malick is notorious for reshaping his films in the editing suite). But local girl Rachel McAdams, dressed up in a Gaia-green dress, and co-star (and ex-Bond girl) Olga Kurylenko made an appearance, gamely fielding questions about Malick’s obscure love story. Frankly, we were hoping to catch some of the wheat that dominates To the Wonder’s landscape, but not even a lone grain made its way to Toronto.

SPOTTED: Trump (JoGo, Emma Watson) vs. Khabouth (Ewan McGregor, KStew) edition

Festival favourites continued to make their way to the Trump Tower over the last few days. Looper’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt and The Perks of Being a Wallflower star Emma Watson both dropped in at Stock on Sunday for a bite (for lunch and dinner, respectively), while Dustin Hoffman made time during a busy day (Quartet, his directorial debut, premiered yesterday) to enjoy a drink at Suits. Despite the tower’s draw, it looks like Trump is being outdone by Toronto’s Charles Khabouth. Joaquin Phoenix, Ewan McGregor, Harvey Weinstein and members of Arcade Fire have all been spotted at La Société, while private parties at soon-to-be-open Patria and Storys have pulled in Kristen Stewart, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams.

TIFF PARTY: Deepa Mehta, Rob Stewart and Ben Mulroney host the annual Canadian Film Centre shindig at the Spoke Club

TIFF PARTY: Deepa Mehta and Rob Stewart host the annual Canadian Film Centre shindig at the Spoke Club

The annual Canadian Film Centre party at the Spoke Club is always, and fittingly, pretty Canadian. Hosted by Ben Mulroney and filmmakers Deepa Mehta and Rob Stewart, the party took place on the eve of TIFF rather than during the festival proper. Sure, that meant the Keiras and Jakes of the world had yet to arrive—though stars are starting to descend on the city today—but the homegrown actors, directors, producers and others involved in the country’s film community came by to show their support (A-listers like Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Sarah Gadon were sadly not in attendance).

The 50 buzziest films of TIFF 2012: we slice through the hype so you don’t have to

The 50 buzziest films of TIFF 2012
Single tickets for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival go on sale this Sunday, September 2. And with a record 372 films being screened (146 of them world premieres), it can be daunting trying to figure out which ones are actually worth the $20 (or $40, for galas and special presentations) and hours in line. The solution: our guide to the 50 most talked-about movies at the festival this year, in which we scrutinize the advance hype (and the buzz from Sundance, Berlin, Cannes and Venice) to separate the must-sees from the flicks that only a mother could love.

TIFF Teaser: Passion, Brian de Palma’s film about a really bad (but really sexy) boss

Brian de Palma’s recent efforts (The Black Dahlia, Mission to Mars) may not have lived up to his earlier works, but we’re still hoping that Passion will be a renaissance for the director. Noomi Rapace plays a young businesswoman who must contend with the sadistic mind games of her boss (Rachel McAdams)—mind games which apparently include girl-on-girl make-outs and shadowy boudoirs straight from the set of Eyes Wide Shut. This Sapphic game of cat-and-mouse follows the (successful) formula of Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan: Oscar-nominated director, professional intrigue, murder and a much-talked-about lesbian love scene that will crowd the lines at your local arthouse cinema with high-fiving frat boys.

CONFIRMED: Toronto’s Rachel McAdams and Sarah Gadon will be at TIFF

(Images: TIFF)

They may be from Toronto, but that doesn’t make us any less excited to know that hometown stars Rachel McAdams and Sarah Gadon will be attending TIFF this year. McAdams plays the childhood friend-cum-love interest of Ben Affleck’s character in Terrence Malick’s new film To The Wonder, as well as a lusty, psychotic executive in Passion (Brian De Palma’s remake of Alain Corneau’s Crime d’amour), while noted beauty Gadon takes on the role of a beloved starlet in Brandon Cronenberg’s Antiviral (Gadon’s character is disease-inflicted, and her virus is harvested, sold and then injected into fans in a “biological communion” of sorts—it is a Cronenberg flick, after all).

TIFF 2012: 111 celebrities who might be in town for the festival

We can’t confirm that certain celebrities will be in town for TIFF 2012 just yet (the film announcements were only made this morning!), but we went through the list of special presentations and galas to come up with a list of 111 celebrities who might be here to celebrate their film’s premiere. It’s a long list to be sure, and it’s going to be keep growing, but so far there are names like Glee star Darren Criss, Bollywood megastar Siddharth, A-List hotties Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Eva Mendes, and Hollywood royalty Bill Murray, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks.

Spotted: Rachel McAdams takes a bike ride

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams just missed each other (Image: The Notebook)

Ryan Gosling just left Toronto this morning, and now we’re getting reports that Rachel McAdams is out and about on her bike today. It would seem McAdams made a stop at Camros Organic Grocery for a bite to eat—a far cry from the donairs and burritos Goz and Eva Mendes ate earlier this week. We’re mostly intrigued by how perfect the timing is: Gosling peaces out and then McAdams immediately heads out on the town? It’s probably just a coincidence.

More images revealed of Rachel McAdams on the set of Brian De Palma’s Passion (and they’re so, so weird)

Not too long ago, we revealed the first image from Brian De Palma’s Passion: a steamy shot of Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace on the verge of making out. Now, new images have been made public from the set, including McAdams looking sinister in a shower (what is she thinking?), adorning a creepy mask akin to the Nip/Tuck carver’s and a titillating look-at-how-irritated-I-am-sitting-around-in-expensive-lingerie shot. This movie is going to be weird (and probably amazing).

A super-sexy image of Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace, from Brian De Palma’s film Passion, is revealed

Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace (Image: Still from Passion)

Brian De Palma’s Passion, set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, looks absolutely steamy. The first image from the movie was revealed this week, and understandably it involves castmates Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace on the verge of making out. (It is a film tease, after all.) The movie is an erotic thriller set in the world of international finance, with money- and power-hungry Christine (McAdams) playing games with her innocent, lovely and easily exploited protégé Isabelle (Rapace). Of course, while a film about seduction, manipulation, dominance and humiliation would be good on its own, there’s also the addition of a murder plot to look forward to. Could it be? A film sexier than this summer’s Cosmopolis?

Rachel McAdams competing for MTV’s Best Kiss award against Ryan Gosling

Attention: Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling are both nominated for Best Kiss at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on June 3. McAdams will be up for the award with Channing Tatum for their smooching in The Vow, while the Almighty Goz is up with Emma Stone for their face-merging in Crazy, Stupid, Love. So, it’s almost like a reunion for the steamy Notebook duo, except McAdams will be going home with Michael Sheen. (And Goz will either stop a fight afterward, or hang out with a model.)
