Cumberland Cinema screened its last film ever on Sunday night

Since 1981, the Cumberland Four Cinema has played host to movie premieres, TIFF screenings and plenty of exclusive alternative and independent films, but on Sunday, it shut its doors forever. The Toronto Star reported on Saturday that the cinema had been renting the space on a month-to-month basis of late, until the landlord finally terminated the lease. Cineplex spokesperson Pat Marshall says the films that might traditionally play at the Cumberland will migrate to Yonge and Eglinton’s Canada Square and Yorkville neighbour Varsity. RIP. [The Star]
