The Drop director Michaël R. Roskam talks about being one of the last to work with James Gandolfini

The crime thriller The Drop features one of the final on-screen performances by James Gandolfini. Questions about what it was like to work with the late Sopranos actor were bound to arise at Saturday afternoon’s TIFF press conference for the film, attended by stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, writer Dennis Lehane, and director Michaël R. Roskam. Sure enough, Gandolfini was the first subject up for discussion.

“He’s a great actor, great artist, and a great man,” Roskam said. “To be a director and see this icon, one of the greatest actors of his generation, perform so close to you was an inspiration for all of us.” Rapace, a twist of pink shot through her long blonde hair, took some issue with Roskam’s account what it was like to put the cast together (he initially approached Hardy over Skype, wow). Also discussed: dialogue coaches, bars as sociological studies (ew). It was not a scintillating discussion.

Things picked up when one reporter asked Lehane about his “keen interest in the criminal underworld,” which is kind of like asking Stephen King about his “keen interest in scary stuff.” Ever-eloquent, the Mystic River and Shutter Island writer boiled things down to American class antagonism, before comparing himself to the Bard. “I think it’s a rig game,” Lehane said of the split between the haves and have-nots. “It always has been. I’m interested in the have-not side. Because that’s who I grew up with…All noir is working-class tragedy. The difference between noir and Shakespeare is the heights they fall from. In Shakespeare the king falls from a height. In noir, the hero falls from a curb.”

Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace Drop by the Princess of Wales Theatre

In the gritty crime drama The Drop, living meat man Tom Hardy plays a Brooklyn bartender drawn into the seedy Chechen crime underworld. (Side note: why are crime dramas always “gritty” nowadays? Whatever happened to the squeaky-clean crime dramas of old? And why are people always “drawn” into underworlds? Why can’t they ever be sent a formal invitation?) The Brit hunk was scrubbed free of any screen grime when he took to the red carpet on King Street yesterday, alongside co-star Noomi Rapace (the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). Hardy greeted fans arriving with plenty of Dark Knight box sets to sign, while also fielding questions about working with the late James Gandolfini, who makes one of his last on-screen appearances in The Drop. Also: I heard through the ol’ grapevine that Hardy dined post-premiere at The Black Hoof on Dundas. That’s cool, because the Hoof’s a great restaurant. But frankly, it’s a bit disappointing that a guy built like Hardy doesn’t source his horse carpaccio from an Anadolu Pony he chases, tackles and consumes alive.

TIFF Teaser: Passion, Brian de Palma’s film about a really bad (but really sexy) boss

Brian de Palma’s recent efforts (The Black Dahlia, Mission to Mars) may not have lived up to his earlier works, but we’re still hoping that Passion will be a renaissance for the director. Noomi Rapace plays a young businesswoman who must contend with the sadistic mind games of her boss (Rachel McAdams)—mind games which apparently include girl-on-girl make-outs and shadowy boudoirs straight from the set of Eyes Wide Shut. This Sapphic game of cat-and-mouse follows the (successful) formula of Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan: Oscar-nominated director, professional intrigue, murder and a much-talked-about lesbian love scene that will crowd the lines at your local arthouse cinema with high-fiving frat boys.

Not too long ago, we revealed the first image from Brian De Palma’s Passion: a steamy shot of Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace on the verge of making out. Now, new images have been made public from the set, including McAdams looking sinister in a shower (what is she thinking?), adorning a creepy mask akin to the Nip/Tuck carver’s and a titillating look-at-how-irritated-I-am-sitting-around-in-expensive-lingerie shot. This movie is going to be weird (and probably amazing).

Brian De Palma’s Passion, set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, looks absolutely steamy. The first image from the movie was revealed this week, and understandably it involves castmates Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace on the verge of making out. (It is a film tease, after all.) The movie is an erotic thriller set in the world of international finance, with money- and power-hungry Christine (McAdams) playing games with her innocent, lovely and easily exploited protégé Isabelle (Rapace). Of course, while a film about seduction, manipulation, dominance and humiliation would be good on its own, there’s also the addition of a murder plot to look forward to. Could it be? A film sexier than this summer’s Cosmopolis?
