Sutherland outside the Ritz-Carlton during TIFF last year (Image: Ken Munday)
Former Toronto resident and 24 star Kiefer Sutherland joined Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgård to walk the red carpet for one of the buzziest flicks at last year’s festival—Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. At this year’s festival, Sutherland will be in town to promote The Reluctant Fundamentalist, an international political thriller co-starring Kate Hudson and Liev Schreiber (who are both coming to town as well).

Canadian Film Centre founder Norman Jewison’s annual private BBQ is a bit of a trek from TIFF central on King Street West, but it’s definitely worth the trip. This year’s fete will take place on September 9 at the CFC Windfields Estate, the centre’s colonial revival–style home base just north of the Bridle Path. It boasts orchards, a formal terrace and woodlands, plus stunning views of the city—and of celebrities like Sarah Gadon, Paul Haggis, Jim Cuddy, Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Reitman, who have all been seen touring the grounds during the festival.

The first weekend of TIFF is basically one big long party, with a non-stop crush of big premieres, boldface names and tremendous amounts of running around (sleep is usually not involved). In case you missed it, here are last weekend’s five most talked about red carpets:
Kiefer Sutherland provided a little Can-Con at the Ryerson Theatre last night for the early evening premiere of Lars von Trier’s much-ballyhooed new film, Melancholia. Of course, the cheers for homegrown Sutherland were quickly drowned out when True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård rolled in. He seemed to enjoy the attention, which we think is, you know, nice and all (also nice—all six feet, four inches of that vampire goodness). Not surprisingly, however, the movie’s star, Kirsten Dunst, ultimately stole the show, smiling profusely as she strolled along the carpet, looking retro-chic in a pleated white skirt and polka dot blouse. Fresh! But we have to wonder: where were the Charlottes (Rampling and Gainsbourg)? See the gallery, after the jump.
