Scrutinizing the glamorous gowns and sharp suits worn by film industry elite is one of the principal pleasures of TIFF (after all the movie talk, of course). And now that the festival is winding down—most of the A-listers have already dispersed, taking their impossibly attractive faces and designer wardrobes with them—it’s time to pick out the best of the bunch, as well as a few notable flubs.
It’s no secret that TIFF is obscenely, absurdly front-loaded, with the premieres for all the biggest films—and the red-carpet jaunts for their associated stars—happening on the first weekend. And, in case you weren’t keeping track all weekend, we did it for you. Here are the top five red carpets: Read the rest of this entry »

TIFF Deals: That Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes flick (The Place Beyond the Pines) scoops up distribution
The Place Beyond the Pines, a crime drama starring Ryan Gosling, his lady love Eva Mendes and their well-documented white-hot chemistry, just scored a distribution deal. Focus Features walked away with the U.S. distribution rights, although a number of big-name companies (like The Weinstein Co.) were interested in the film as well. Insiders told the Hollywood Reporter the arrangement cost roughly $2.5 million. Director Derek Cianfrance worked with the Goz in the successful (and super heart-breaking) Blue Valentine, so it’s no surprise The Place Beyond the Pines got snapped up so quickly after premiering Friday (the two were seen hugging on the red carpet). In the thriller, Gosling plays a bleach-blond, motorcycle-riding, bank-robbing loner trying to support his girlfriend (Mendes) and their son. Bradley Cooper stars as a rookie cop, hot on Gosling’s tail. Which is…hot. [The Hollywood Reporter]
Thanks to crawling traffic, Ryan Gosling and his girlfriend and co-star Eva Mendes were late to the world premiere of The Place Beyond the Pines. Not that the crowd held it against the Goz—they erupted into a near riot when they spied his dark blond locks emerging from a car outside the Princess of Wales. (He bleached his hair for his role as a bank-robbing stunt motorcycle driver, but we’re happy to report it’s back to its normal hue.) Inside, there was no less love going around: Gosling hugged co-star Bradley Cooper and director Derek Cianfrance, while Cooper gave the Cianfrance a hug plus a high-five. And Mendes, wearing a lacey Dolce and Gabbana sheath, blew reporters kisses, lest they feel left out. Actress Jennifer Lawrence even showed—in Dior, no less—to lend moral support (Cooper and Lawrence worked together on The Silver Linings Playbook, which premieres tonight at TIFF). The only thing not getting any love? Gosling’s look, which lacked a tie—if he’s planning to be in Fifty Shades of Grey, he’s going to need some neckwear.
For our second red carpet showdown, Anna Karenina star Keira Knightley faces off against Imogene’s Kristen Wiig, The Place Beyond the Pines’ Eva Mendes and Seven Psychopaths star (and former Bond girl) Olga Kurylenko. We’ve already seen a lot of black on the red carpet at this year’s festival, but Knightley’s Elie Saab lace dress is undoubtedly a stunner. Wiig and Mendes both opted for lace as well (Mendes’ Dolce and Gabbana sheath fits her perfectly, though we’re undecided about her turban—perhaps a bit over-styled?). Finally, Kurylenko’s high-necked dress ups the sex appeal with not one but two slits. Which look wins your vote?
That’s right, the Almighty Goz will be back in Toronto for this year’s film festival. Cue unadulterated fawning, slobbering and hyperbolic statements of all types (and that’s just from us). Starring in two much-ballyhooed blockbusters—Drive (a good movie) and The Ides of March (not such a good movie)—and looking devastatingly handsome everywhere he went, the London, Ontario-born actor was pretty much the king of last year’s festival. He proved himself a charmer of George Clooney proportions, took his mom on a date and hung out with noted party animal Dave Matthews on the festival social circuit. This time around, he’s in town for his turn as a professional motorcycle rider-cum-bank robber in Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines—which just so happens to co-star Gosling’s girlfriend, Eva Mendes. Hot red carpet makeout? Yes, please.
We can’t confirm that certain celebrities will be in town for TIFF 2012 just yet (the film announcements were only made this morning!), but we went through the list of special presentations and galas to come up with a list of 111 celebrities who might be here to celebrate their film’s premiere. It’s a long list to be sure, and it’s going to be keep growing, but so far there are names like Glee star Darren Criss, Bollywood megastar Siddharth, A-List hotties Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Eva Mendes, and Hollywood royalty Bill Murray, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks. There’s no doubt that there is a huge celebrity presence in the city right now—it seems like A-listers are everywhere, grabbing burritos, sitting down for dinner, sipping cocktails, and attending private parties and graduations. But, of course, most of those stars are here to work, so anyone looking to spot Julianne Moore and Chloe Moretz shooting scenes from Carrie will be pleased to note that the cast is currently on set in a parking lot outside our building, just east of Queen and Church. We haven’t seen any pig’s blood yet, but we have our fingers crossed.
Ryan Gosling just left Toronto this morning, and now we’re getting reports that Rachel McAdams is out and about on her bike today. It would seem McAdams made a stop at Camros Organic Grocery for a bite to eat—a far cry from the donairs and burritos Goz and Eva Mendes ate earlier this week. We’re mostly intrigued by how perfect the timing is: Gosling peaces out and then McAdams immediately heads out on the town? It’s probably just a coincidence.
Vacation time is over for Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, as they were just spotted at Pearson International Airport making their way through customs (just like everyone else). From eating two dinners in one night to attending his mother’s graduation at Brock University (aw!), this really has been a whirlwind vacation.
He came to Toronto for some east coast–inspired grub and a burrito, and today he’s at Brock University attending his mother’s graduation with girlfriend Eva Mendes. Goz refused questions from reporters, saying today is all about his mother. Aw, bless.
Apparently Ryan Gosling is letting whatever Hollywood diet he’s on go while he’s vacationing in Canada with girlfriend Eva Mendes. It was confirmed to us that the Almighty Goz was grabbing a burrito at Big Fat Burrito in Kensington last night. Donairs and burritos. Goz likes to work with his hands.
They had us fooled! All reports said Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling were on their way to La Belle Provence, but it turns out the two were in Toronto last night. The pair was spotted eating contemporary east coast cuisine at Roncey’s Hopgood’s Foodliner. The sales of donairs—fancy and traditional—are about to go through the roof.
There’s been a lot of speculation as to whether or not Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are still together, but the actress’s most recent appearance on Ellen suggests the relationship hasn’t quite soured just yet. When Ellen Degeneres mentions the Almighty Goz’s name, Mendes giggles, blushes and has to throw her hair over her face to hide a big smile. Mendes also discusses the possibility that she may see him that night after the show, which is when people eat dinner, make popcorn, watch films and engage in various bedroom activities. Aw, bless.
Ryan Gosling has allegedly broken up with Eva Mendes and is said to have told her he needs “time to think.” Hold your sighs of relief for one second, because you still can’t have him: he has been spotted fraternizing with a blonde German model in Capetown at the Grand Café. The Daily Mail reports that “‘he tried to disguise himself with a woolly hat and scarf and seemed eager not to be noticed as they sat at a beach table, but he was clearly entranced by her.” The Almighty Goz certainly doesn’t rough it—first Rachel McAdams, then Eva Mendes, and now a sexy German blonde. Poor guy.
