Introducing: Michael’s on Simcoe, a new downtown steakhouse from the old manager of Harbour Sixty

Introducing: Michael’s on Simcoe

(Image: Gizelle Lau)

This TIFF season was a busy one for the intersection of Adelaide and Simcoe, with the opening of the new Shangri-La Hotel and Soho House Toronto. Just around the corner, Michael’s On Simcoe opened briefly during the festival and saw visits from the likes of Marion Cotillard, Emily Blunt and Colin Firth. The titular Michael is owner Michael Dabic, who worked as a general manager at Harbour Sixty for almost 10 years before striking out on his own. Unsurprisingly, his new restaurant, now open to the public, is squarely aimed at the suits in the financial district across University Avenue, with a menu that features steak, seafood and modern Italian.

TIFF Roundup: the winners and losers from this year’s fest

Make no mistake: While the TIFF red carpet is all air kisses and man-hugs, the festival is also a competition—for distribution deals, media attention and precious, precious Oscar buzz. Below, the winners and the losers in the hunger games that were TIFF 2012:

Red Carpet Style: 23 looks at TIFF’s leading men and women

Scrutinizing the glamorous gowns and sharp suits worn by film industry elite is one of the principal pleasures of TIFF (after all the movie talk, of course). And now that the festival is winding down—most of the A-listers have already dispersed, taking their impossibly attractive faces and designer wardrobes with them—it’s time to pick out the best of the bunch, as well as a few notable flubs.

TIFF RED CARPET: Colin Firth celebrates his 52nd birthday with Emily Blunt at the Arthur Newman premiere

TIFF RED CARPET: Arthur Newman

Since TIFF began, the seemingly tireless Emily Blunt has walked the Argo red carpet, snuggled up to husband John Krasinski at Soho House, hit the CAA party and, last night, worked the premiere of the dark comedy Arthur Newman with her co-star Colin Firth. In the film, Firth plays a man who fakes his own death, and draws a pill-popper named Mike (Blunt) into his scheme. The latter looked lovely in a recycled silk tulle Tory Burch dress, a show of support for Firth’s wife, Livia, who spearheaded the Green Carpet Challenge to encourage stars to wear eco-friendly duds. However, the night belonged to a blue-suited Mr. Firth, who was celebrating his birthday—begrudgingly. Apparently, Blunt and the film’s crew were forcing him out on the town after the premiere to mark the occasion (even though, according to Blunt, “He’s one of those people who doesn’t want to celebrate his birthday”).

TIFF PARTY: Naomi Watts is a dancing queen at the CAA bash

TIFF PARTY: Naomi Watts is a dancing queen at the CAA bash

Watching Naomi Watts shake her groove thang to the sultry sounds of George Michael at the CAA party at Cinema in Liberty Village on Sunday night is one of our top TIFF moments this year. The stunning star was in high heels and a formal gown, but that didn’t stop her from owning the dance floor—she even shimmied to Naughty by Nature on her way out.

TIFF WEEKEND ROUNDUP: The five hottest parties from the festival’s first few nights

Movie debuts and closed-door distribution deals may be the driving forces behind the Toronto International Film Festival, but it’s the late-night soirées and off-hours socializing that we really wait to see every September. From cute celebrity couples cooing in the corner to a private rendezvous between Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart to the hot mess that was the Spring Breakers post-premiere party, TIFF is just as much about nonstop star-studded gloss as it is about the, you know, films. With that in mind, we offer a quick roundup of some of the best bashes from the film fest’s opening weekend.

TIFF PARTY: Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart hang out in the ultimate tweenage fantasy at Soho House

TIFF PARTY: Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart hang out in the ultimate tweenage fantasy at Soho House

The party gods smiled on Soho House again last night, which is not at all surprising at this point (though we suspect they’ll get some competition for the most star-powered soirée tonight from the CAA party in Liberty Village). Those of us keeping a celebrity score card were able to tick off Kristen Stewart, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Emma Watson, Emily Blunt, Jake Gyllenhaal, America Ferrera, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Alexander Skarsgard, Andy Samburg and Woody Harrelson. The biggest goss of the night, though, was the clandestine Twilight/Hunger Games rendezvous (who knew Bella and Katniss were buds?). Read on for the scoop—in our third set of dispatches from Soho House.

TIFF PARTY: Keira Knightley, Kristen Wiig’s errant eyelashes and a hot Jude Law at Soho House

TIFF PARTY: Soho House (Day Two)

Last night Soho House, the hottest party spot in town, hosted events for three movies (Imogene, The Master and Anna Karenina) and had a late-night party lounge, which meant the star count was off the charts. In attendance, at one point or another: Keira Knightley, Kate Hudson, Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Kristen Wiig, Michael Pitt, Natasha Lyonne, Darren Criss, Trudie Styler, Paul Haggis, Amy Adams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harvey Weinstein, Rupert Grint, Skrillex and Nina Dobrev. A collection of dispatches from night two—from our Soho House bureau chief Courtney Shea.

RED CARPET POLL: Which actress dressed the best on the first night of TIFF 2012?

RED CARPET POLL: Which actress dressed the best on the first night of TIFF 2012?

TIFF is officially underway, which means the dress parade has started in earnest. On the first night of festivities, Kristen Stewart sported a long-sleeved floral number by Zuhair Murad at the On the Road premiere, while Kirsten Dunst opted for soft-coloured Dior at the same event. Over on the Looper red carpet, Emily Blunt showed off a maroon cocktail dress with a zipper running all the way down her perfectly toned back. Marion Cotillard’Dior Haute Couture tweed dress (with a back peplum) at the Rust and Bone special presentation was the most fashion-forward of the night, especially paired with her blue satin heels. But did it win your approval?

TIFF PARTY: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski have a threesome with a moose at Soho House

TIFF PARTY: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski have a threesome with a moose at Soho House

At long last, the much-anticipated, members-only, super-impossible-to-sneak-into Soho House opened its permanent Toronto location last night. Looper’s post-premiere party served as the first of what will be many TIFF bashes. The film’s opening-night screening marked the first time in years the festival opened with a Hollywood blockbuster—a snub to CanCon, perhaps, but it proved to be a boon for star-stalkers. The celeb count was high for an opening-night soirée: Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Tate Donovan and Jason Reitman all attended. For all the gossip, check out the first edition of our dispatches from Soho House below—by onsite bureau chief Courtney Shea.

TIFF RED CARPET: Looper’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt (plus John Krasinski!) open the festival

TIFF RED CARPET: Looper’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt (plus John Krasinski!) open the festival

For the first red carpet of TIFF 2012, the world premiere of Looper at Roy Thomson Hall was fairly subdued. The fans were well behaved—as were the stars, including the now-ubiquitous thinking woman’s heartthrob, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Mr. Planet Hollywood himself, Bruce Willis. Gordon-Levitt’s dapper pinstripe getup matched the tone of the time-travel thriller, which neatly marries its sci-fi premise with pulpy film noir style. Director Rian Johnson (who reportedly had 20 family members in town for the premiere) and co-stars Piper Perabo, Noah Segan and Emily Blunt also took their turn waltzing down the red carpet. Blunt’s skin-tight burgundy dress won our approval, as did her plus-one and irrepressibly happy husband, The Office star John Krasinski, who grinned at his wife and everyone else in his immediate vicinity. Krasinski even headed into the crowd to sign autographs. Sure, there’s a chance he was signing photos of Gordon-Levitt, but still, what a nice guy.

John Krasinski, stalwart of The Office, was spotted by @SpottedbySerena, stalwart of Pearson airport. Since he’s film-less at this year’s festival, we can only assume he’s here for the parties (and maybe to support his wife, Emily Blunt, who’s starring in the buzz-heavy Looper and Arthur Newman).

CONFIRMED: Emily Blunt will be back in Toronto for TIFF this year

(Image: TIFF)

We’ve already confirmed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis (Looper) and Colin Firth (Arthur Newman) will be around for TIFF. Now, Emily Blunt’s PR rep has told us that the English star will also be in town to promote those two films, in which she co-stars. Last year, Blunt got her party on when she attended the festival for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. This year, she’s got two premieres to attend, to which we say: double the premieres, double the party.
