The script for the new Ghostbusters III is in Dan Aykroyd’s truck right now

For everyone that has ever converted a backpack into a proton pack for Halloween (or on any other occasion—we’re not judging!) or had a certain theme song stuck in their head, we’ve got some news: Dan Aykroyd confirms that the script for Ghostbusters III in almost finished. In fact, he had it on hand when he spoke with the Canadian Press recently. “The script is in my truck, so that’ll tell you how close we are,” Aykroyd said during an appearance at an LCBO to promote his vodka line. The only problem: Bill Murray has yet to confirm he’ll participate in the sequel. “I don’t think any of us would do it if Bill said no,” Sigourney Weaver told Collider.com in a recent interview. “Why would we do that? I think the whole point is to get together and have fun,” she said. Aykroyd mimicked Weaver’s sentiments yesterday, telling the Canadian Press that “[Murray] is certainly welcome to walk in the door anytime. We love him. And it’s hard to contemplate doing it without him.” Aykroyd will appear in the film to train a whole new crew and introduce a female ghostbuster into the mix because, unlike a reluctant Murray, he isn’t afraid of no ghost.

The Restaurant Wars challenge on Top Chef is always a fan favourite, and for good reason—it’s a reliable way to jump-start any season low on drama, bleeped-out words and finger pointing, much like our rather polite Canadian edition. After the jump, our recap of how it played out on last night’s episode.

Was it just us, or was the level of cooking on last night’s episode of Top Chef Canada miles ahead of the safe, bland fare from the first two weeks? Maybe the chefs have gotten over their first time jitters. Or maybe it was the presence of actor, restaurateur, winemaker, illicit vodka purveyor and guest judge Dan Aykroyd that (ghost-)busted them into shape. Whatever it was, the contestants stepped up their game—without sacrificing the all-important smack talk and clowning around in their under things (this time Origin’s Steve Gonzalez did the honours). Here, our recap of the best dishes, trash talk and product placements.

Week two of Top Chef Canada celebrated that most essential of Canadian values: moderate ambition. Last night’s episode—brought to us by the Dairy Farmers of Canada and featuring two cheese-themed challenges—consistently rewarded those not-too-tall poppies who found the sweet spot between being flat-out bores and overexerting flame-outs. Thankfully, episode two turned out to be way cheekier than the somewhat polite premiere—there were plenty of chefs shooting their mouths off and clowning around in their underwear (sweet abs, Patrick Wiese). Here, our recap of the dizzying highs, the grotty lows and the creamy centres that turned out just right.

Dan Aykroyd says Ghostbusters 3 is almost a go

If we shilled vodka, we'd probably have to wear sunglasses inside too (Image: Chelsea Oakes)

Dan Aykroyd is doing the media rounds to promote his role as the voice of Yogi Bear in the new digital version of the cartoon. In a Q&A about the film with Globe and Mail, he let slip that a third Ghostbusters is sort of in the works. The script is complete and is “probably one of the best comic scripts I’ve ever read.” Aykroyd also divulged that it contains the “the role of a lifetime” for Bill Murray. Anna Faris is also rumoured to be involved.

The Globe also asked the actor about his Crystal Head Vodka, which the LCBO banned because of its skull-shaped bottle. Like our commenters, Aykroyd thinks the boycott is unnecessary but also inconvenient. He spends his summers in Ontario and has to drive to Watertown, New York to buy it. Aykroyd is hoping our stick-in-the-mud liquor control board will come around so we can enjoy the  Newfoundland-distilled vodka he happily pushes (and imbibes).

The List: 10 things chef David Adjey can’t live without

Ten things chef David Adjey, star of  the new Food Network show The Opener, can’t live without

The best perk ever
I used to work as Dan Aykroyd’s personal chef in Kingston, and then I decided to move to Santa Barbara to cook at a resort. He gave me a car as a goodbye present and said, “If you’re gonna live in California, you’re gonna need a California car.” It was a gold ’66 Impala—the same car a lot of L.A. gangsta rappers drive. I keep the licence plate in my office.

A badass leather jacket
I got this jacket in 2003 when I was going through a rebel phase. It was the same month I separated from my ex-wife, opened my restaurant Nectar, and got signed to Restaurant Makeover. It cost $1,000—which was huge money at the time—at Due West on Queen Street. I love that it’s worn in and a little beat-up. I’m too old for it now, but I bust it out once in a while.

Kitschy collectibles
I have been collecting antique egg cups since the early ’90s. I got the idea from the Park Avenue Café in New York, after I ordered the flan and it was served in an eggshell set inside an egg cup. I thought this was fantastic, so I started scouring flea markets and garage sales. Now my mom and friends are on the mission, too. My favourites are from post-war, 1940s Japan; they say “Made in Occupied Japan” on the bottom.

Yesterday wasn’t quite TIFF, but it was the perfect occasion to get some buzz for a homegrown project before the celebrities arrive. Piers Handling, Dan Aykroyd and Adam Vaughan were on hand for the dedication of Reitman Square, named after Leslie and Clara Reitman, the parents of Ivan (and grandparents of Jason), who once owned a car wash at this site. Ivan, along with his sisters Agi Mandel and Susan Michaels, donated the $22-million plot of land that now houses the Bell Lightbox.

Santa-inspired beer latest booze to be banned by Ontario liquor commission

Samichlaus: keep out of reach of children

Yet another alcoholic beverage has been banned in Ontario for its apparent appeal to youngsters. This time, it’s an Austrian beer called Samichlaus, which means St. Nicholas in Swiss-German. Like Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka and a string of other alcoholic beverages, Samichlaus was found to have breached advertising guidelines that prevent liquor packaging aimed at children. We would take this as a sign that anyone planning to sell alcohol in Ontario probably shouldn’t make their packaging look cool, but Samichlaus is actually pretty boring. The portrait of St. Nicholas looks less like a benevolent gift-bearer and more like the Player’s cigarette guy .

LCBO bans Dan Aykroyd’s cool-looking vodka-filled skull

Former (and possibly future) Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd has offered a drink to Ontario liquor stores, only to be turned down like an old man at a Queen’s University bar. Crystal Head Vodka—which comes in a clear skull-shaped bottle—has been banned for sale at the LCBO because, apparently, mixing skulls and alcohol doesn’t convey the best marketing message. “The image of the human skull is the thing that’s really problematic for us,” LCBO spokesman Chris Layton told the Globe. “That’s an image that’s commonly associated with death. It’s especially problematic at a time when there are concerns around binge drinking by younger adults, which in some cases, unfortunately, has resulted in alcohol poisoning.”
