Canada’s year on YouTube: the tragicomedy to end all tragicomedies

Of course Rebecca Black made the list (Image: Rebecca Black)

Remember when home videos were so painfully boring, but you were happy to sit through them if doing so made a loved one very happy? Well, now the videographers in our lives don’t really need us anymore, especially if they’ve got access to the Internet and a hook like “baby scared at mom blowing nose” or an eight-bit space/Pop-Tart cat named Nyan that doesn’t really do anything at all (except, perhaps, bring joy to those who view the delightful little scamp). These are just two of the top 10 YouTube videos viewed by Canadians this year. Find out how Canadians have wasted their time this year, in our crimes against humanity YouTube’s most watched videos list of 2011 (you should be ashamed of yourself).

Charlie Sheen tweets real phone number to Justin Bieber (but why?)

Charlie Sheen successfully made headlines again for about a minute yesterday when the former Two and a Half Men star and current loose cannon accidentally tweeted his personal phone number to Justin Bieber. Apparently, Sheen made a classic Twitter mistake: he sent an update instead of a direct message to the Biebs that read, “310-954-7277 Call me bro. C.” Sheen quickly removed the post but was inundated with roughly 1,800 texts and many phone calls, some of which he answered with “Ray’s Pizza” and “Winning.” Sheen’s bad jokes aside, the real question here seems to be why on earth Charlie Sheen was attempting to contact Justin Bieber. Considering the Stratford native’s squeaky clean image, we’d advise the Biebs to say no to any tiger blood Sheen may have offered him.

LOGO POLL: We grade the Toronto Blue Jays logos through the ages

Toronto Blue Jays logos

Logos are like personalities, and the Toronto Blue Jays, in their short history, have had as many as Charlie Sheen mid-meltdown. With the launch of its latest logo rendition last week, we look back at the evolution of the club’s branding over the years and figure out which current Jay best personifies each era.

Gawker gotchas: a roundup of Toronto’s most embarrassing moments according to the gossip giant

Earlier this week, the Globe and Mail’s “Caption Writing Person” set off an online frenzy with a series of epic one-liners mocking Hollywood excess in the age of the Occupy Everywhere movement. But it wasn’t long before people began wondering—for no good reason, really—whether the Globe had been hacked. For its part, Gawker published a post saying the caption writer had gone “rogue” (an adjective we think remains best reserved for failed vice-presidential candidates). Of course, we’re just grateful that this Can Con moment was far less embarrassing than the usual appearances. Nonetheless, some Toronto Gawker headline highlights, after the jump.

Two Canadians still have a shot at #winning Charlie Sheen internship

Charlie Sheen poses with a fan (Image: justaufo)

Finding intern postings on-line is nothing new, but this particular opportunity certainly is: Charlie Sheen’s personal social media intern. Two Canadians are still in the running for the position, which Sheen initially announced on Twitter, stressing that the successful candidate would be #winning and have #tigerblood. Of the 82,000 applicants, apparently only 50 have these Sheen-friendly qualities, and among them are Sepy Bazzazi from Vancouver and Phil Pallen, formerly of Belleville.

To-Do List

The Weekender: Black Lips, Shakespeare in puppet form and six other events on our to-do list

1. IN PINOT VERITAS: LUNCHEON WITH NORMAN HARDIE
There aren’t many Ontario wines that garner rave reviews around the world, but vintner Norman Hardie makes several Pinot Noirs that do at his eponymous winery in Prince Edward County. The celebrated winemaker is providing some excellent examples of those Pinots at this exclusive luncheon, which also features a special menu from Nota Bene chef David Lee. April 15. $85. Nota Bene, 180 Queen St. W., 416-977-6400, notabenerestaurant.com.

2. CHARLIE SHEEN: MY VIOLENT TORPEDO OF TRUTH/DEFEAT IS NOT AN OPTION
Tiger blood, winning, benders—Martin’s boy isn’t so great with that whole law-abiding thing, but he is unusually skilled at redefining previously boring words. We’re not sure if Chuck’s Toronto showing will be good, as in Chicago, or walkout-inducing, as in Detroit, but either way, we know we’ll be there. April 14 and 15. $79.50–$109.50. Massey Hall, 178 Victoria St., 416-872-4255, www.masseyhall.com.

What can Toronto expect at Charlie Sheen’s Violent Torpedo of Truth stop at Massey Hall?

It’s old news now that Charlie Sheen’s live show, My Violent Torpedo of Truth, bombed at its Detroit debut (and there are plenty of videos to prove it). With 80,000 tickets sold for the rest of the tour—including those for two Massey Hall sessions later this week—organizers knew they had to revamp the show. To do so, they relied on Joey Scoleri, a former Toronto radio personality and Violent Torpedo co-producer. The native son overhauled the show, turning it into a Q&A—a straightforward format that allows Sheen to interact with fans. The reviews so far are mixed. It was reasonably well-received in Chicago, but New Yorkers, who were privy to the actor’s antics over the weekend, had polarized reactions. The question for us is: will the show be up to snuff for its Toronto debut on Thursday?

Torpedo Alert: Charlie Sheen is indeed bringing his show to Toronto

Charlie Sheen’s show comes to Massey Hall on April 14

For the first time since Joe Carter’s walk-off home run in 1993, Torontonians are finally winning: this April, Charlie Sheen is bringing his hotly anticipated one-man show to Toronto. We first speculated that Charlie Sheen Live: My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option would expand beyond its eight-date U.S. run and head north of the border after the initial two shows sold out in only 18 minutes.

Will Charlie Sheen’s Torpedo of Truth live show come to Toronto?

Not long after joining Twitter and setting the Guinness world record for fastest acquisition of 1 million followers, Charlie Sheen proclaimed himself to be “bi-winning” and will soon embark on a one man show entitled Charlie Sheen LIVE: My Violent Torpedo of Truth. The show opens on April 2 in Detroit, and will repeat in Chicago on April 3. Unsurprisingly, both shows sold out in a matter of minutes. Sheen appropriately tweeted, “Fastball; Detroit/Chicago sold out in minutes… Thanks to Sheen’s Cadre..! #WINNING c.”

Charlie Sheen jokes in the legislature at Queen’s Park? Tim Hudak’s not afraid to go there

Tim Hudak, elected MPP in the legislature, former minister to the Crown and leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, raised the level of debate at Queen’s Park today, saying:

“I’m more likely to believe that Charlie Sheen’s going to kick his drug habit than Dalton McGuinty won’t raise taxes.”

“Later today we’re going to debate mental health issues,” said finance minister Dwight Duncan, according to the Star. “An important debate, but (Hudak) wants to make fun of people with addictions instead of focusing on the issues.” He goes on to ask for an apology to Ontarians with addictions—an apology he is entirely unlikely to get. Addicts across Ontario, meanwhile, were heard saying, “Sheen? Don’t compare us to that guy.”
