Bero in Leslieville is maybe, probably closed

We’ve been keeping a close eye on Bero, the high-concept kitchen on Queen East, which has been giving off a boarded-up, tumbleweed-y kind of vibe for the past several weeks. Last spring, the restaurant lost its original chef, modernist artiste Matt Kantor (known for his very finicky plating practices), and no successor was ever named. Now BlogTO is reporting that the restaurant is closed for good. We weren’t able to reach the restaurant for confirmation, and Bero’s voicemail message states the the closure is “temporary.” We’re not so sure, though: according to at least one source, the business is currently being shopped around (for $49,000, in case anyone’s interested).

Bero 1 star
889 Queen St. E., 416-477-3393

Chef Matt Kantor has graduated from pop-up dining series to a permanent home: a 30-seat corner spot decorated on a budget, with overstuffed chairs and vases of droopy mums. Bookish couples from the area don’t seem to care—they’re relieved that they have another option for a Friday date without the kids. Kantor is a devotee of modern Spanish cooking, in particular the technical wizardry of Ferran Adrià, so a salad includes mushy marshmallows flavoured with tomato, a tough tube of squid is dyed with beet juice to resemble a chili pepper, and every dish is a fussy composition of rectangles, cylinders and smears.

A new Spanish restaurant from Matt Kantor is opening in Leslieville

Matt Kantor is finally making the transition from popular pop-up cook to full-fledged restaurant chef. Over the last two years, Kantor created a string of successful dinner series and one-off events, including the Secret Pickle Supper Club, Hidden Kitchen and his epic three-night, 22-course homage to renowned Spanish chef Ferran Adrià. Now, he’s teaming up with the owners of The Commissary to create a new Spanish restaurant named Bero, which will replace the laid-back east-end eatery at 889 Queen East. The space is scheduled to open in early July after undergoing minor renovations.
