Last Thursday, in the Malaparte room at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Jordin and Saul Mimran’s Moon celebrated its one-year anniversary with a party that included the launch of the brand’s basic menswear line. Leigh Lezark from DJ collective the Misshapes provided the music, only occasionally conversing with Toronto media and friends of the Mimran clan. Guests included designer Alfred Sung, The Bay’s Suzanne Timmins and Christopher Sherman, writer Sarah Nicole Prickett, Ports 1961 campaign creative director Tu Ly, In Fashion’s Glen Baxter and socialite and event planner Ainsley Kerr. Bulletproof broadcasting queen Marilyn Denis has announced the roster of guests for her new eponymous daytime talk show on CTV, and dare we say it’s way better than expected? The new program has been in the works since she left CityLine in 2008 after 19 years with Citytv. Desperate Housewives star James Denton will be the gabfest’s first celeb invitee when the show launches next Monday; appearances by singer Josh Groban, action superstar and sometime Torontonian Maggie Q (Nikita), model Jessica Stam and Brandon Walsh Jason Priestley will follow later in the week. Viewers will also be treated to visits by designer Alfred Sung, chef Mark McEwan and fitness guru Suzanne Somers, although we’re most looking forward to witnessing the shrieks (i.e., ours) guaranteed to greet press-shy Friday Night Lights running back Taylor Kitsch, in town to promote his new movie, The Bang Bang Club.
Like many clothing designers before him (Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Versace), Alfred Sung, one of Canada’s household fashion names, has made forays into the home decor market, first in 2005 with a collection for Zellers. His latest venture is a wicker patio furniture collection, titled Sung Outdoor, that will be carried exclusively at The Bay. Rather than using brown rattan that recalls dated Florida retirement villas, Sung has chosen a weather-resistant plastic in white, slate and black and paired it with brushed steel legs and modern shapes. Prices are affordable: the Paris chair (at left) is $199, and the Capri dining set (with table, two armchairs and four side chairs) is $1,100.
