TIFF PARTY: Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and other celebs revive a flagging Seven Psychopaths party

It’s odd when a party with not one but two VIP areas (a ground-floor zone and another on the second level) suffers a noticeable dearth of VIPs. Such was very nearly the case last night at the Seven Psychopaths premiere party at Patria, Charles Khabouth and Hanif Harji’s yet-to-open King West restaurant. The darkly romantic space was far from full for most of the evening. After Abbie Cornish walked the red carpet in a red Giuiletta gown, the small press clutch packed away their cameras and moved on. There was a second burst of excitement when Woody Harrelson (wearing a grey suit, a TIFF baseball cap pulled low and flip flops) snuck in through a side door with his entourage, but it wasn’t enough to keep guests from trickling out (one young lady was even overhead saying, “This is a lot less fun than I thought it would be”). Those who stuck it out were rewarded though because, before we could declare the event dead, both Christopher Walken and Colin Farrell dropped in, upping the star quotient considerably (Shinan Govani later observed that the party had a five-to-one ratio of celebs to regular people).

TIFF RED CARPET: A cute Shih Tzu (plus Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken) at Seven Psychopaths

TIFF RED CARPET: A cute Shih Tzu (plus Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken) at Seven Psychopaths

Martin McDonaghSeven Psychopaths is about a group of socially maladjusted losers and weirdos embroiled in a dog-napping scheme gone awry. But there was no evidence of maladjustedness, or psychopathy, on the red carpet at the Ryerson Theatre late last night, where stars Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Olga Kurlyenko, Abbie Cornish, Graham Broadbent and Woody Harrelson showed up, as well as writer/director McDonagh. Also making an appearance: the Shih Tzu everyone in the film is fighting over. Nothing says glitz and glamour like a cute dog! As for the bipedal stars, Farrell was typically camera-shy, while the glowering Walken was skeletal and half-scary as ever. Harrelson roamed the red carpet sporting a TIFF Festival ’12 cap, further cementing his status as honorary, beloved Torontonian.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Madonna looks good, but behaves badly, at the red carpet gala for her new film, W.E.

(Image: Christopher Drost)

Madonna was the picture of elegance as she walked the red carpet at last night’s gala presentation of W.E., a film she wrote and directed. Joining her were the movie’s stars Andrea Riseborough and Abbie Cornish and, randomly, socialite Suzanne Rogers. Absent, however, were the flick’s James D’Arcy and Oscar Isaac, who chose to attend the Ten Year premiere instead. We have to admit we were disappointed in the lack of man candy on display and surprised, frankly, that Isaac skipped the premiere (one should know never to disappoint Madge like that). Either way, the three ladies (Madonna, Riseborough and Cornish) looked ravishing in their red carpet wear. As for the treatment of the TIFF volunteers on hand, that’s another story entirely. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

Madonna bails on her after-party, but that doesn’t stop Harvey Weinstein from throwing a great one at Grey Goose Soho House

Michael Fassbender swings and misses. (Image: Alexandra Wyman)

For the fourth and final evening, Grey Goose Soho House was the celebrity venue of choice, with back-to-back-to-back parties for Ten Year (starring Channing Tatum, Kate Mara, Rosario Dawson and Justin Long), Coriolanus (starring Gerard Butler, Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain), and a star-studded, multi-floor party hosted by legendary Hollywood hitmaker Harvey Weinstein. Earlier in the evening, Madonna, the hydrangea hater herself, joined a very select group of people for a private dinner celebrating W.E., but she slipped out the back door before things got crazy (does this surprise anyone?). Butler stayed for the entire night (in excess of five consecutive hours) and was never too far from a bevy of unknown models and one Megan Fox lookalike. Coriolanus castmate Fiennes dipped out early, refusing autographs as he made his exit. No sweat off our backs—the room was beginning to fill with so many recognizable faces we could barely keep up. Find out who and what they were wearing in a gallery after the jump.

TIFF 2011 announcement: 53 films, one new venue and a whack of stars who might come to Toronto

Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz is one of this year’s Galas

TIFF unveiled part of its 2011 lineup today, and 53 movies will have their North American or world premieres in Toronto this fall. Among the spectators at the press conference this morning in Toronto was a solitary celebrity—actress and director Sarah Polley—but expect lots of boldface names in the city come September. Directors whose films are slated for this year’s fest include Lars von Trier, Francis Ford Coppola and Marc Forster, and they could come accompanied by such stars as Olivia Wilde, Juliette Binoche, Carey Mulligan, Blake Lively, Glenn Close, Vincent Cassel and Ice Cube (yes, of the famed Are We There Yet? and Friday). Those are just some of the famous faces that we’re hoping to spot at Sassafraz, pop-up nightclubs and the latest TIFF venue, The Princess of Wales Theatre. We’ve compiled a full list below.
