David Lawrason’s Weekly Wine Pick: a stellar bottle of Ontario bubbly

Weekly Wine PickCave Spring Blanc de Blancs Brut

$29.95 | Niagara Peninsula | 90 Points
Today, Ontario’s lieutenant-governor convenes various Queen’s Park dignitaries to taste the winners of his Awards for Excellence in Ontario Wines. I was on a panel in Niagara that selected 11 out 272 submissions over two days of blind tasting, and this stellar sparkler was among the chosen few. Made entirely from chardonnay, in the traditional Champagne method, and aged three years in the bottle, it highlights Ontario’s great bubbly potential.

Katy Perry’s weird child models (Image: Jag Gundu)

Sunday’s MuchMusic Video Awards saw a host of celebrities decked out in Canadian designs; clothing by Toronto-based designers was worn by the likes of  Katy Perry, Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara, Nelly Furtado and Keshia Chanté. Perez Hilton makes suckers of Carly Rae Jepsen fans at his MMVA after-party

Fans hoping to have an intimate moment with Carly Rae Jepsen at Perez Hilton’s MMVA after-party last night were made fools of, as paying guests who weren’t part of the two-celebrity-deep VIP booth had to stay trapped behind a steel barricade while the “Call Me Maybe” singer performed. (Although, to be fair, even at a distance the young party-goers appeared to enjoy the performance.) Instead, a gaggle of suited Barney Stinson types were permitted access to Katy Perry and Jepsen, but the celebs did not look as though they were actually enjoying themselves.

LMFAO with Selena Gomez (Image: George Pimentel)

The MMVAs traditionally skew very young, and the junior set usually go crazy with their style to impress headliners like Carly Rae Jepsen, Justin Bieber and Marianas Trench (they are, apparently, still making music, and young boys and girls adore them). But it was this year’s co-hosts, RedFoo and Sky Blu of LMFAO, who took the cake for most unusual fashion choices. At times, their kooky style crossed the line into just weird, like when the 37-year-old RedFoo sported a pair of inappropriately tight PVC-like pants and a blazer with no undershirt, or when he stripped down to nothing but a hoodie, a pair of print underwear and a necklace that read “IWRKOUT” (a reference to LMFAO’s song “Sexy and I Know It”). We’re aware of how popular the duo’s party anthems are, but did no one stop to think about how it might look to have a man approaching 40 strip down to his panties for the amusement of tweens alongside his 26-year-old nephew (Blu)? Consider us a little grossed out.
