J. Crew to open in Yorkdale?
That’s what Flare editor Lisa Tant is tweeting: “Word is that J. Crew’s first Canadian store will be this fall at Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall. I’m guessing similar strategy as Victoria Secret.” And she should know, right? We haven’t heard confirmation from any other sources, but the American fashion company did recently say that it planned to open its first Canadian store in Toronto in 2011.

this isn’t even funny if it’s not true.
You know what’s not gonna be funny? The CDN retail prices.
You know what’s not gonna be funny? How many people are gonna shop like mad there. Which I will too…lies.
I can’t imagine they can price themselves above BR, of which I put them a similar–if slightly more casual–category.
Why bother??? I would fall over if they carried the same extensive selection as they do in the States, and forget about comparable sales… J Crew sales in the U.S. are amazing… I hope they prove my skepticism wrong…
There is a “J Crew opening soon” sign up on Eglington near Warden. They are rumored to be opening up a store in shops at Don Mills.
J Crew is great, but any chance of J Jill opening?–much broader size and style range than J Crew–
J. Crew…great. Another homogenous piece of Americana to blight the Canadian retail landscape.
Yeah cuz the “Canadian retail landscape” you speak of offers us so much variety and original product! Haven’t you noticed that every shoe store/chain carries the usual suspects – Nine West, Sarto and the like. Buyers play it so safe and boring here! Nothing beats the amount of choice of brands and styles available at US retailers. And when they say SALE they mean SALE not 10% off like they do here. Did BR Canada even have sales five years ago? They did, but the discounts are greater now and more frequent – you can thank the recession for that at least. Anyway, BR has declined ever since their last creative director left to take the helm at Kate Spade. I haven’t been excited by anything at BR since and it used to make up at least 40% of my wardrobe if not more.
At least some American brands (Filson, Quoddy, Blackbird etc.) still produce in North America; 99.9% of Canadian brands have offshored production in toto (Sorels have been made in China since the late 1990s). Apparently, Canadian corporations were some of the first and to take full advantage of the low wage/poor working conditions/repressive state ‘benefits’ that China has to offer, and the conversion was finished over a decade ago.
J.Crew does not produce all of their in-house brand in North America, but some of it is, such as a couple pairs of jeans I own that were hand-made in Canada, no less. J.Crew also features many brands which produce their goods exclusively in politically free places with enforced labour-laws, such as Filson, Quoddy, Belstaff, Fjallraven, Alden and many others; many of these brands are impossible to find in retail outlets in Canada and must be ordered/imported. Except for Canada Goose and maybe some of the Mark’s Work Warehouse brand ‘Dakota’, Canadian clothing manufacturers are not interested in reinvesting their profits as wages into the continent they call home, and primarily draw those profits from.
So while ‘homogenous piece of Americana to blight the Canadian retail landscape’ may have a soft-left, lyrical-catchiness to it, you are really saying nothing at all, as our ‘retail landscape’ is already blighted by poorly made Chinese imports produced by politically and economically oppressed people. At least J.Crew will offer an alternative.
