Jeremy Laing shows a sporty collection full of snaps and fasteners at NYFW

At New York Fashion Week, Toronto native Jeremy Laing eschewed the traditional catwalk show and presented his spring/summer 2013 collection in a film, an approach that allowed the designer to showcase his sporty separates against a fittingly spare white background. The layered looks pick up where Laing’s fall 2012 show left off, although this spring grouping, unlike that ultra-austere collection, at least contains a smidgen of colour and one stand-out print (a Laing calling card we missed in February). Utilitarian details like snaps, fasteners and pockets contrast with the softness of silk, chiffon and cotton. That juxtaposition has us admiring a slouchy white and grey dress and a light jacket inspired by classic varsity jackets. We’re less sure, however, about the bibs on show—they remind us of bulletproof vests, which may be taking the utilitarian theme a bit too far.
