David Dixon may not wow every season, but he’s a fixture in the industry for socialites and on The Shopping Channel
The penultimate fashion show, ending two long weeks of air kissing and finagling for front-row seats, was David Dixon’s eponymous line. The socialites may have been exhausted, but we still spotted long-time supporter Suzanne Rogers, Dixon’s brother and Daytime Toronto host Glenn, Jenna Bitove, Lovas designer Wesley Badanjak and Fashion Television host Jeanne Beker. Our favourite looks were the lace overlays on top of shimmery ivory in skirts, minis and a boat-neck top that would be perfect for summer parties. Similarly ideal for getting gussied up was the white trench with a stripe of black at the hem with floral appliqués. Dixon’s styling seemed bolder and edgier this year, and we loved the cocktail rings, metallic ropes, a cross-shoulder chain and leather cuffs with attached chains that saved two black evening gowns from being otherwise unremarkable. The oversized butterfly print Dixon used on a one-shoulder black dress and an exposed back number wasn’t a crowd favourite (one nearby guest was overheard remarking, “It looks so Shopping Channel”), and some looks—like a knee-length halter and a series of long black dresses—weren’t really inventive enough for a runway show. Dixon’s show won’t have the fashion media scrambling to crown him the new king of cool, but many women will find something to covet in this season’s collection—even if they buy it on The Shopping Channel.

I actually did attend the show and was really blown over – the show was likely the best of the week. It was nice to see real talent and not some knocked off or imported from China designs.

Thank you for attending the show. I can appreciate your comments as I have been doing shows for the past 16 years. If you were to know me on a personal basis or have read any material about me, you would clearly know that my goal as a designer is not as you put it “racing to become the king of cool.” I leave that to some other people within the industry.
My position as a designer is simply to design clothing that makes women of all walks of life feel better about themselves. Whether the clothing hangs in Holts, The Bay, The best independent boutiques, or even on The Shopping Channel.
The reason I put on shows is because I want to. I have the support of the industry and the public. For me it is not a competition, its a vehicle of my personal vision. Once again Fraser, if you knew me and what my vision is about, you would know that. To conclude, in my experience, people listen more closely to a whisper than a bunch of bells, whistles and gimmicks.
Thank you for your thoughts, and maybe in time we will meet, but it will not be in a “race to become the king of cool,” I’ll give you a drink of water if you so need it on your way to achieve that title.
