In a town committed to Asian eateries, it’s not surprising that north Vietnamese cuisine has emerged as its own sub-genre. Hanoi 3 Seasons’ second location, in the heart of Leslieville, takes a small step up the dining scale with soft mood lighting and unharried service. Spicy shrimp soup with lemon grass and tamarind, and grouper with dill (served as soup or as a vermicelli bowl) exemplify the north Vietnamese kitchen: the shrimp offers a suggestion of heat rather than a smack in the face. The rich broth retains subtlety, and the dill, though distinct, doesn’t overpower. A salad of perfectly pink halved shrimp and lotus shoots bursts with bright, fresh flavours. Cash only.
