La Pasiva [?]
416-636-6555
Uruguayan cuisine is not well known in this city, even if some of its staples are as familiar as pizza and tenderloin sandwiches. Paisanos and lunch-breakers (for the most part) fill this cheerfully chintzy restaurant for faina and chivitos. The former, a chickpea-based flatbread, is too greasy here to hold its mozzarella and more mushy than melting. The sandwich-style chivito, Agave y Aguacate however, shines and likely drives most of the business in this eight-table dining room: chopped olive and mushroom cut a tart path through layers of skirt steak, ham and lettuce piled high on pillowy house-baked bread. Order it platter-style, which arrives with side helpings of potato salad, fries, greens and a potential coronary. If you stick around for dessert, your best bet is the chaja, a bombe of peaches, sponge cake and crushed meringue.
