When Sukhothai opened a few years ago on this unloved stretch of Parliament, it impressed the patrons with its focus on genuine Thai recipes and fresh ingredients. The Thai-Canadian couple who founded the eatery, Jeff and Nuit Regular, have moved on to start a new restaurant, the trendy Khao San Road on Adelaide, leaving Sukhothai in the hands of Jeff's parents. The change in ownership hasn’t affected the quality. Much more casual than its club district sibling, Sukhothai is crammed with touristy Thai snapshots and handwritten notes from enthusiastic customers professing their loyalty. The tom kha gai, a coconut milk soup, is loaded with crisp, colourful peppers and tender chunks of chicken, but an overdose of lemongrass and galangal gives the dish too much acidity. A better bet is the gaeng garee: the dish’s perfectly cooked potatoes are covered in a fragrant sauce reminiscent of an Indian curry. The Sukhothai pad Thai is torqued up with extra peanuts and herbs but is overly sweet.
