The middle-of-nowhere location—at the corner of Ontario and Richmond streets—doesn’t deter the crowds, who come in search of something better than cookie cutter Thai. In a 100-year-old brewery, there are three comfortable rooms of exposed yellow brick, well-worn wooden floors, crisp white linen and the obligatory multi-coloured silk. Six crispy two-bite vegetarian spring rolls are bland and come with sweet chili relish, and “divine crispy morning glory” delivers four discs of delicious, crunchy, golden tempura Thai spinach drizzled with sweet-tart tamarind chili sauce. Chef Sasi Meechai’s menu is dotted with her riffs on traditional Thai dishes: Sasi’s pad Thai with sun-dried baby shrimp isn’t the red, sweet, ketchup-laden stuff we’ve come to accept as pad Thai. Rather, spice and intense umami unite delicate noodles, tofu, chicken and shrimp. “Elegant” Panang curry—flavourful coconut broth, kaffir lime and garlic—is labelled mild but still has bite. Sadly, the beef is tough but the broth quite delightful, soaking the tender brown rice. Vegetarian and gluten-free choices are also on the menu. Creamy, smooth green tea crème brûlée is perfect for dousing the fire. The wine list is perfectly respectable, but the service is overzealous to the point of feeling hurried out the door. Mains $11–$24.
