Little details—salvaged wood communal tables, a thoughtful wine list— raise Khao San Road a notch above the city’s many cookie-cutter noodle houses, and the food is a step above, too. To start, fresh rolls bring moist rice paper swaddling Thai basil, cucumber and peppery house-made chicken sausage. It’s more like a terrine than a spring roll, but highly enjoyable nonetheless. Mains can come mild, spicy or Thai spicy—and the latter is no joke. The popular khao soi is excellent: a turmeric-thickened yellow coconut curry, floating slippery egg noodles and slightly unmanageable hunks of beef. It’s simultaneously sweet and fiery, the heady richness of the creamy soup offset by the crisp fried noodles sprinkled on top. Pad gra prao is a bowl of minced beef, pork or chicken flavoured with the Thai holy trinity—fragrant basil, sweet sugar and salty soy sauce—and served with perfectly al dente rice and a rich, oozy fried egg. Tiny tapioca pearls in fresh coconut milk are a lovely, comforting dessert. Thailand’s Singha beer is on offer, and white wines are nicely chosen to complement intense Southeast Asian flavours. Closed Sunday.
