Rodney Clark’s sprawling, subterranean oyster bar, decorated with the maritime bric-a-brac of an obvious pack rat, remains unpretentious in a neighbourhood that’s increasingly the opposite. Devoid of King West scenesters, it’s a destination restaurant for seafood lovers—indeed, after 24 years, Rodney’s is still Toronto’s reigning oyster bar. A shucker’s dozen of the best bivalves is assembled from around the globe and might include sweet Lucky Limes (P.E.I.), plump Glidden Points (Maine) and creamy Kaiparas (New Zealand). From the kitchen, the lobster club is old school, allowing the star ingredient to shine: a mountain of sweet, mayo-bound lobster meat is layered with crisp, thick-cut bacon and juicy tomato on toasted Ace Bakery white bread. It’s a relative deal at $23. Mains $20–$28.
