After celebrity chef Roger Mooking (from the Food Network’s Everyday Exotic) handed over the kitchen to his sous, Daniel Duckett, it seemed this formerly trendy lounge was doomed to fade into obscurity. Although the once-stunning room is starting to show signs of wear (dogeared menus, peeling wallpaper), and the scene has become increasingly clubby (with ear-pounding house music and posey 20-somethings), the staff is still charmingly friendly and the food, with a few exceptions, is consistently good. The Sicilian eggplant is a coy play on bruschetta, but the deep-fried baby eggplant is too oily and overpowers the diminutive topping of buffalo mozzarella, heirloom tomato and crispy sautéed mushrooms. The strip loin is perfectly cooked and bursting with umami. Desserts excel: properly flaky, honeyed baklava and warm plum-pear crumble that tastes like grandma’s. Decent wine list, but it’s more about the champagne cocktails. Mains $9–$32.
