Having helped define King West cool from the time it opened its original location back in 2003, the Bay Street outpost of this modern Japanese “experience” hopes to bring a bit of hip to that buttoned-up corridor. Dashing servers tend to the upwardly mobile crowd with swift, choreographed precision. Colourful cocktails decorate most tables, but the real action is on the sake list, which goes beyond Japan to include selections from Oregon and California. The giant ebi shooter, with tiger shrimp, mango and avocado, is one of the best things on the menu. Pass on the bizarre smoked salmon makimono, seasoned with what tastes like powdered barbecue seasoning. Stick to the classics—carefully cut sashimi, a deep miso soup, shoyu mirin–glazed grilled mushrooms—and you’ll leave happy. Sharing plates $14–$35.
