Though it’s only a couple of blocks from Ossington’s hipster chaos, you won’t find any ironic moustaches or skinny jeans here. With U-shaped booths, a brass rail and metal chairs, it feels like the party room of an aging strip club. But what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for with genuine hospitality and the flavour-packed cooking of owner Isabel Carvalho, an impressive one-woman show in the kitchen. An expertly timed cataplana (large enough for two lumber—jacks) shows off the Portuguese flair for marrying pork (shoulder, chouriço, bacon) and seafood (clams, mussels, shrimp). Juicy chunks of rabbit are braised in red wine and onions; soaking up the heady sauce are thick, freshly fried potato chips. Natas do céu, a bowl of booze-soaked cookies, whipped cream and lemon custard, brings back happy memories of old-fashioned cafeteria-style puddings. The all-Portuguese wine list focuses squarely on value. Mains $18–$35.
