Though it seems stuck in the ’90s—laminated menus, sponge-painted walls, high-stacked food—this calm, candlelit seafood restaurant is a welcome respite from the sensory overload at Yonge and Dundas. At times, the kitchen has an unfortunate tendency to equate volume with quality: a chorizo appetizer brings a massive sausage, grilled and divided into more than a dozen slices. It is enormous, but the flavour is generic. Cataplana, Portugal’s famous seafood stew, arrives brimming with sweet shrimp, briny clams, tender squid and moist fish in a deeply flavoured broth of white wine, tomato and garlic. Grape-savvy servers will guide you through the list of underappreciated Portuguese wines. Mains $18–$36.
