Much has changed in the Annex in the past 32 years, but this cozy corner house, with its covetable, leafy patio, remains a good choice for a low-key, Latin-tinged night out. The interior has lots of little nooks that help up the evening’s romance factor. On one visit, asparagus soup is a simple, creamy purée that shows off spring’s best. Served in a martini glass, ceviche of calamari, baby shrimp and sea bass is nothing extraordinary, but reliably citrus kicked and good. One of the evening’s specials is a nicely sized, juicy chicken breast dressed in a creamy, spicy sauce of cashews puréed with coriander and lime. It’s nutty but bright, hearty but fresh, served alongside soft chunks of roasted sweet potato and beets. Value-priced wines include some interesting picks off the LCBO list. Service can be forgetful. Mains $18–$30; prix fixe $25.
