Crammed with locals, this genuine neighbourhood bistro is a rare bird in a region that caters to squadrons of day-trippers. The unfortunate location, however, is at odds with picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake: housed in a miniature strip mall with the blinds drawn against the parking lot view, its darkness is exacerbated by the black-and-red bordello colour scheme. The unsightly decor quickly fades into the background against chef Ryan Crawford’s accomplished cooking, friendly service and a stellar cellar of Niagara’s finest. The charcuterie plate is a gold medal decathlon of house-cured meats, pâtés and cornichons. Highlights include a silky cloud of foie gras mousse, smoky venison summer sausage and ribbons of Berkshire lardo melting atop warm rye toasts. Available in half and full portions, entrées showcase Crawford’s playful side and his idolatry of bacon. An original surf-and-turf finds panko-crusted and barely fried albacore tuna paired with a crisp rasher of pork belly, their combined heat wilting a bed of peppery arugula dressed in bacon fat vinaigrette. Sweets keep pace to the finish line with a slow-baked puck of intensely chocolatey mousse and a satiny scoop of salted caramel ice cream with roasted almonds giving the plate some crunch. Mains $18–$32.
