Moneyed retirees and visiting Torontonians dine quietly and comfortably at this bistro, nestled between a Home Hardware and a Foodland on Wellington’s main strip. A springtime appetizer of poached quail eggs, asparagus and ribbons of potato fried into a golden nest is a bit preciously plated for a comfort food bistro but is seasonally apt and refreshing. Wild chive shoots and flowers add a delicate, peppery flavour. A thick ribeye for the steak frites has an excellent salty crust, and the shoestring fries are perfectly crisp. The Muscovy duck breast, though, is too tough, and the accompanying potato gratin is bland. The bacon and chocolate butter tart is an unctuous sendoff. The homey interior feels like an old friend’s dining room, with gas lamps and reclaimed doors. Mains $19–$29.
