If a ’90s designer interpreted belle époque Paris, you’d get the interior of Down the Street. Damask drapery, moody lighting and theatre posters seem a little gauche, but somehow they work, making Stratford staffers and tourists feel equally comfortable. Pints of Stratford pilsner are $5 and suit the casual North American bistro fare, which could be executed with more care. A starter of limp caesar salad with mushy lardons is forgettable. The kitchen would be better off if it stuck to the basics: the faultless, crunchy panko-crusted black cod is ruined by a caramel–soy butter sauce that’s too reminiscent of dessert. When it comes to the real desserts, however, homemade sorbet brings three scoops: pleasingly tart mixed berry, tasty lemon and an unfortunately freezer-burned cantaloupe. Mains $18–$30.
