Despite the fact that Tanoor has been in business for five years, the previous tenant’s sign (Patough) remains outside, confounding newcomers to this Iranian stretch of Yonge Street. The leadoff dish from chef-owner Jalal Moghadam strikes out: the acidic chopped salad of tomatoes, cukes and red onion is overwhelmed by ersatz citrus flavour (thanks to bottled lemon juice). Fortunately, Moghadam hits it out of the ballpark with kashk badamjan, a rich purée of fried eggplant topped with thick yogurt, olive oil and dried mint. An order of crisp, light Persian-style naan is a must to scoop up every last bit of this velvety dip. Mains $12–$30.
