The alcoves and patio of Mangia e Bevi’s wood-and-brick dining room are packed with employees of the nearby offices and film studios during lunchtime. Gossamer strips of beef carpaccio are stretched out on a plate, doused in olive oil and served with a simple salad of arugula and parmigiano. It’s tender but a bit too warm. The pizza that emerges from the kitchen’s oven is on par with the city’s best: the crusts are floury and crisp, with the right amount of char and chew. The tomato sauce on the bufalina pizza is bright and peppery, but water from wet buffalo mozzarella dots the pie. A mix of fresh pasta, pine nuts and cherry tomatoes is oily and oppressively salty: the anchovies on the dish need a good rinse. The service is cheerful and quick during the lunch rush.
