Some restaurants do their best to go unnoticed, like this lunch-only spot tucked in a hard-to-find corner of Hart House. The neo-gothic dining room has a tranquil, almost monastic quietude, especially for diners lucky enough to cadge a table overlooking the idyllic cloister. The neo-gothic, almost monastic escapism ends at the decor, however, as the short, focused menu caters to modern sensibilities (and student pocketbooks). Smartly conceived and executed mains, like a moist, perfectly caramelized roasted fillet of halibut with spicy pear, beet and kimchee salad, are amazing value: none cost more than $17.95. Minor missteps occur, but it's easy to overlook a slightly dry, if full-flavoured peppercorn-spiced beef cheek because the overall experience is so charming. Attentive staff and a brief, inexpensive, quality wine list round out the meal. Closed Saturday. Mains $15–$18.
