The Jewish deli may be on the endangered restaurants list, but this Thornhill mainstay thrives, especially during the weekday lunch hour, when it fills with a predominantly male clientele looking for a carnivorous fix. Centre Street’s hand-sliced smoked meat sandwiches are two-hand commitments, the fresh rye barely containing three-inch piles of succulent, peppery beef. Order the combo and it comes with crisp fries, vinegary slaw and a fat, sour dill. But like a one-hit album, the rest of the menu doesn’t even crack the Top 40. Matzo balls are pillowy soft, but the broth tastes canned. Focusing on quantity over quality, moist smoked whitefish doesn’t get much help from ho-hum potato salad, unripe tomatoes and packets of Kraft dressing. Pastries from the in-house bakery, including an apple-cherry strudel and scrumptious three-bite cheese danishes, are solid.
